Ok I have the slim PS2. This has happened about a month or so ago, but lazy me, I just haven't got time to look into it. What happens is that the lense seems to be working ok, but it doesn't read PS2 games. However, it can read PS1 games perfectly fine. So as it seems, it is able to read CD, but not DVD.

Is this the lense? This is the only conclusion I can come to since I've tried cleaning it every possible way.

In what ways have you tried to clean your lens? Do you smoke while playing? Smoke tends to cling to the lens after time. I would remove your case and use a Q-Tip (cotton swab) and some rubbing alchohol to gently clean the lens. Use the other side of the Q-Tip to dry the lens. Then try your DVD-ROM game again.

Can you play DVD movies on it?

Best Regards,

Yes I have, alcohol, taken apart and dusted, dried, cd lense cleaner, almost all. No I don't smoke. I rarely play my PS2 to be honest. Maybe once a week or so only. It's kept in a well maintained area that doesn't accumulate too much dust. No it doesn't read any DVD, games, back-ups, swap magic, but CD does work like SNES emulator and music cd's.

Hi.

From what I've read and seen, the PS2 laser has two potentiometers on the underside of the lens.

One controls the amount of power for CD reading. The other controls the amount of power for DVD reading.

In your case, it appears you need to adjust the DVD potentiometer to the correct setting (since CD reading is OK). The easiest way would be to use a multimeter to measure the Ohms of the potentiometer.

I found the "Playstation 2" repair guide by "Mark Eastman" at "powerfulguides" quite helpful. They have a free-trial link.

Good luck
