Hey i was just looking at this disk quality guide:

And i just realised most of the disks im using Maxell 16x DVD+R(i burn at 8x) are third class disks and i have over 600 movie backups that i burned and now im worried they are all going to be crap after a little while what do you guys think? I always thought maxell was pretty good :(.

Have all the discs been 16X? I have been using Maxells for years in the 4X and 8X DVD+R. They have coded out as RicohJpnR01, Ritek R02, and Maxell 002. The Ricoh and Ritek, even though listed as 2ndClass, have been trouble free and still play fine.
Apparently Maxell has chosen to outsource to CMC for their 16X media. Personally, I have experienced the dreaded CMC poor quality issues in the 4X media (Memorex), and will not be purchasing Maxell 16X media unless I see "Made in Japan" on the label.

Well i just dug back into my 600 disk collection looking in the middle and the maxells are 8x Ritek R03 while all the 16x are CMC MAG :/
About 15%(only the newest) at 16x so maybe i should take back the still unopened 100 16x pack i have and get 8x? And now im left with about 75 16x crap :/.

Woo i just took them back and got some MAXELL002 that guide says its first class can anyone verify this and/or has anyone used them?

i think i've only ever used Maxell by accident once or twice so will let 'real' Maxell users comment instead..

Maxell 002 is classified as 1st class, I've been using them for about a year. Lucky you, as it is now rare, in fact, almost impossible to find. I'm starting to see cakes of 75, not 100, and everything is Made in Taiwan. The only store bought media "Made in Japan" that I am able to now find is Sony 8X Dvd+R's....These code out to TaiyoYudens, again GOOD STUFF.
Good decision to take them back, Happy Burning!

bugmenots- Genuine Maxell - Made in japan is excellent media ! The Ritek Made (Made in Taiwan) Maxells - Are Good as well ! Though if you can get the Maxell MIJ's @ the same price Go 4 it first ! The Made in taiwan Maxells that Code out CMag = Trash -do not burn please return ! If you like the Ritek/maxells you can get OFFICEDEPOT Brand media and it will be the same media other than comsetic qualities ! & is often much cheaper - My experience with riteks/maxell /officedepot has been with the 8X media which atleast near me is getting scarce ! Being supplanted/replaced by 16x media - In the officedepot brand media you will get either Ritek codes - Or Ricohjpn ( Ricoh ) atleast in the samples I've bought though I have'nt gotten around to burning yet !But I've had good results with both brands at lower speeds so far 4X & 8X media ! hope this has helped out somewhat . don't get me wrong though, i do see Maxell in supermarkets etc for sale but i'm not paying silly money for them when i can get Verbatim /Verbatim TY cheaper... i've not seen any over here in UK at reasonable/sensible prices

HP DVDR/CDR last manufacter was fujifilm now coded CMC? is that any good cuzz i have been using HP as mu cheap brand when i dont have any money cuzz Verbatim here is over costed... 10dvd+r disc pack = $14.99

nice info on that HP sux as well as memorex ill just stick with verbs i guess thx yet again for the intel man is there any media that is cheap and good that i dont hav to order off online

Hey guys its me bugmenots im on this account instead anyway...
I went to walmart to buy some more maxell dvds because they have cakes of 75s for $22 on sale so i bought 2 more of those and they said Made in taiwan but the media code is MAXELL 002 i thought only Made In Japan were MAXELL 002?
