I could afford 1 disk, but then I got nothing to burn it with considering those burners cost a bundle, and I don't have a standalone player that will play them either.......guess I stick with plain old DVD, sigh :)

Here is a bargain Samsung for only 500 bucks.

some thing to think about

Toshiba rep: Blu-ray discs 'flawed' will warp & damage lens

Posted by Dan Bell on 05 September 2006 - 14:18 - Source: Hexus

At this years IFA in Berlin, Hexus.net was able to set down with Jim Armour, from Toshiba?s Storage Device Division, to talk with him about the HD-DVD format and how it compares to Blu-ray. However, in this interview we hear of a supposed troubling flaw, that the storage division representative is relaying to the public, one that could cause damage to Blu-ray drives. In fact, he went so far to confirm to the interviewer, that you could go through players faster than discs! This should be interesting...

HEXUS.lifestyle: But in just raw data storage, Blu-ray is going to be better as it holds more data.

Jim Armour: Looking at the numbers on a bit of paper, you?d think so, but what you need to do is look at the Blu-ray disks and players first, before you make a decision. Let?s go back to the disk construction for a second. HD-DVD uses a sandwich method which helps to combat disk warping. Blu-ray doesn?t. They use a single plastic substrate layer, then add on the recording material and the top it all off with a very hard Zircon layer. This means that when the disk expands to get hot, it will warp downwards as that Zircon layer isn?t going to budge.

HEXUS.lifestyle: But that?s a uniform direction of warping? Surely as long as you?re ready for it, it won?t make any difference?

Jim Armour: You?d think so, wouldn?t you? But now we have to go back to the lens. Blu-ray uses a 0.85 Numerical Aperture and, with their recording layer just 0.1mm below the disk surface, they?ve got to get the lens very close to the disk surface to be able to focus it tightly enough to give them a 25Gb storage capacity. So now you?ve got a Blu-ray lens sitting somewhere between 0.1 and 0.3 millimetres from a disk coated with a substance almost as tough as diamond which, when it warps, can only warp downwards, towards the lens. Guess what happens when you run Zircon over glass at 2000 RPM? Sure, your data will be safe but you?re going to need a new Blu-ray lens.

HEXUS.lifestyle: So the Blu-ray system has a built in flaw that could mean you get through Blu-ray players quicker than you do disks?

Jim Armour: It would appear so, yes. The other thing to remember is that Blu-ray disks are very expensive to produce when compared to HD-DVD disks, mostly because of the construction methods needed to place the recording layer in the optimum distance from the lens so they can get 25Gb of storage space. HD-DVD takes a more sensible and robust route, chosen from a combination of factors ? disk warping, disk durability, focal point of the laser etc. Plus, the use of better codecs mean that HD-DVD doesn?t even need as much storage space as Blu-ray to achieve the same high quality video. The lower disk production costs reflect this too.

Well, I wonder how long it will be before the Blu-ray camp comes out with a statement countering this claim? If it turns out to be true, then we could see a class action suit against Blu-ray manufacturers and also, can you imagine the impact on the launch of the PS3? If it's false, this boy is in trouble and Toshiba will have to eat some crow! You can check out the interview yourself, in it's entirety, by following this link to Hexus.net.

cheers ireland i mean to post that earlier. makes for some hefty reasons to wait a looooong time for these so-called next-gen technologies; look how much of a lottery it is with blank DVD's, i shudder to think what horrors are in store with Blu-ray and HD-DVD

i have read that, and im gonna pretend it's from a nutral party( its obviosly not) i think its true that warping is gonna happen, but wouldnt you think the engineers at Blu-ray foubnd a solution to that? I mean it's a multi platform industry we are tlaking about now, if it fails a lot is at stak...

I know I'll be sticking to old fashioned DVDs. I don't even have digital TV to watch them on anyway. Hell the damn original discs are on sale this week for $27. Not in my lifetime. What are the blanks going for? Vista 's gonna mess up everything anyway. LMAO

Yeah... I'm not listening to a Toshiba rep on the disadvantages to Blu-ray just like I'm not listening to a Sony rep on HD-DVD's. Neither are going to take off right away, DVD is still too new and most people aren't about to ditch their DVDs just a couple years after they trashed their VHS tapes.
