I have a PS2 V4 PAL VERSION (UK) it is fitted with the PNP no solder mod chip and I use Swap Magic 2. My PS2 will not play DVD+R dvd movies but it will play DVD+R games. The PNP mod chip is designed to play all PS2 backups on DVD-R and DVD+R discs but it is not designed to effect how the PS2 plays dvd's. Reading the Forums I had previously believed my PS2 would not play DVD+R PS2 backups but after research into my mod chip and its specs. I learnt that it was capable of playing DVD+R PS2 backups but not DVD+R movies. My PS2 with the PNP mod chip and Swap Magic 2 will play DVD backups as follows:

DVD+R PS2 BACKUP GAMES.
DVD-R PS2 BACKUP GAMES.
DVD-R backup movies.

So to sum up, know what PS2 version you have, know what chip you have and its full specs, and at the end of the day you can just try it with all types of disc known to be working on other peoples equipment.
