I have a Compact Presario running XP. I have an internal CD burner, an internal DVD burner and an external DVD burner. I first started getting the -no disk in drive...- error message on my CD burner and replaced the drive. Now I get the message on all 3 drives whenever I try to burn something. I have tried lots of disks from different manufacturers and none work. I am able to read recorded CD's and DVD's but the disks do not automatically play when inserted into the drives. Everytime I boot up I get 2 -no disk in drive- messages (the external drive is not currently connected). I also get the same 2 messages occasionally when downloading programs from the internet. If I use XP to check the drives, it says they are working properly.
Can anyone give me some suggestions? Thanks for your help.
Did this error first occur after you installed your external DVD drive? Did you install any software when you installed the external drive?
Have you tried uninstalling the drives with Device Manager and then letting WinXP reinstall them upon restart?
Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on each of the drives and select Uninstall.
If that doesn't work, shutdown, open the case and uncable the drives. Restart a couple of times. Shutdown and then recable the drives and restart.
To set autoplay, in the My Computer window right click on the drive and select Properties. Click the Autoplay tab. From the dropdown menu select the type of file or disk, click the Action to Perform radio button, and choose the action to be performed.
Thanks for responding. After I added this message, I realized it was in the wrong place.
I belive the problems started before I added the external drive and I don't think there was any software with the drive.
I tried uninstalling the drives once before and again after reading your message without any luck.
I also set up the autoplay, but it still doesn't work.
I will try uncabling them later (out of time) to see if that works.
When you do the uncabling/recabling, uncable both the CD burner and the DVD burner and restart a couple of times. Then recable only the DVD burner and restart. See if all works OK after doing this with the DVD burner.
I don't know how you're setup w/r to master/slave on the devices, but if the above doesn't work, try swirching the master/slave relationship between the CD and DVD burner to the opposite configuration. You'll have to change the jumper pins on each of the drives. There will likely be a diagram on the label indicating the jumper configurations for each mode. If both drives are set to "cable select", change them to hard master and slave settings with the jumper. Again only cable up the DVD burner and see if it works correctly. If not, then uncable it, and recable only the CD drive and see if it works.
Dude if your pc is a Dell, then the optical drives' jumpers SHOULD be set to cable select! The end connected drive will become master and the middle connected drive will become slave but both drives' jumpers are set to CABLE SELECT!
