when trying to play the video in windows media player i get sound with the windows media visualisations but not the video. ive tried it it in real player and quicktime and they both stop responding when its opened. do i have to install something extra, a codec perhaps? ive searched google but have no idea what to look for so didnt get too far.

Try installing the K-Lite mega codec pack and see if it plays:
