I am having trouble getting my Hitachi v47 drive detected by windows. I put it into modeb with the 2 wire trick and connected it using a sata to usb cable. When I turn on windows nothing shows up in my computer. I know that this cable is working because I tried doing the slax live cd and everything worked up until the last step of puting the drive into modeb I typed in the modeb /dev/sda command and I got an input/output error. But the driver was detected by the vmware player. Here is a link to the instructions that I followedhttp://utterchaosx.blogspot.com/2006/07/running-virtual-machine-with-live-cd.html I dont really care which way I get this thing working if someone has help on either one of these methods I would appreciate it greatly.

While using the 2 wire trick I also checked in device manager for the drive and it is being deteced as a usb mass storage device and working properly I just dont know how to give it a drive name.

Try this:

To get a drive letter assigned (and hence have the drive show up under "my computer") with native SATA, I have to go through "device manager > DVD/CDROM drives > right click on HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR3120L SCSI CdRom Device > Properties > Volumes tab > Populate > OK" . After that it works nicely.

That wont work cause nothing comes up in the cd/dvd drive area it comes up in the usb area as a usb mass storage device I need to make that turn into a dvd drive. I am connecting with a sata to usb cable so it is probably done differently than just straight sata to sata. can anybody else offer any input on this.

thats what I was thinking the connector has the sata cble going in and a usb coming out on the other side buth in the middle it has a way to connect straight to the motherboard through an ide connect I plugged it in that way but still nothing the connection is being detected but the device connected is not. Same as when it was connected through USB windows is picking up the connector but not the device connected wierd.

Thanks for your help again Burning as I was able to piece together your posts and pms from my last problem and solved that one. I am going to get that pci card on tuesday and try this all again. I really want to be able to connect straight through usb though I guess I will have to wait until the x360 is released which I think is also on tuesday we will see how this all works out. Also I connected the connecter up to my dvd burner just to see if that would be picked up through it and it worked just fine just the 360 didnt work or maybe the SATA connecter ???
