I have a similar problem, but my example might help...
I am running the exploit, as well as MyPS2 1.2 off the HDD, and I want to run SMS for DivX movies, but need to make new partions on the HDD. DMS HDD tool keeps crashing on me...
Maybe you can find a way to run the DMS tool that will work.

i figured out how to put mp3s onto my hdd, might possibly be the same for the AVI. files, what i did was just burna data disc and when into my mc exploit, then i chose file browser, and then went and flipped open my flip top (do not push the eject button under the power) put the cd in, and then choose the cdfs or whatever it is and then all the files pop up, and then you just copy and paste them to hdd by pressing triangle to go back to the menu ( the one with the mc0 mc1 mass Etc.) and pick HDD or something like that, but you could try your DivX movies at it

LOL! Ya, I figured it was something like that...
I still need to make a replacement swipe card. (broke my last home-made one, and one of my deals with myself is this is gonna be a "no-money" deal, so no flip top.)
Plus, one of the files is over 840MB, not gonna fit on a standard CD without an overburn, and I have horrible luck in that department...

Ok, progress report:
PS2RealityMediaPlayer PRO loaded and functional
(actually handles JPGs better than MyPS2, but the GUI isn't a nice)
I have been able to play DivX from a burned Cd-R, but still can't copy an entire file to the HDD. Data transfers from FTP AND from CDFS just seize up the PS2 after about 50% (45% once, 55% another time)Two different files tried. one that's 698MB and another that's 576MB.
I suppose I could try smaller files to begin with, but frankly I don't have any...
I imagine that I could get indiviual MP3s to go off of a disc, but haven't tried yet.
More news as it happens.

last night i put a movie ont my hard drive by first using a app called "hdd_format" then created a folder onto my hard drive for movies, then i wen back to ulaunchelf and went under the "cdfs" menu and it read my disc and had the AVI in it, then i pushed R1 and the lil menu popped up, it hen copied it to the cllipboard ant then pressen triangle to get out of cdfs then i opened "hdd_0" or something like that then i went into the movies folder i had created, then i pasted it itno the folder, then i opened the SMS player and it was on my hdd and it worked, hoped that helped
ps. towards the end of the movie my movie kind of froze, but i think that was bcuz i had to overburn at 702mb onto my blank cd
