curious
I've had at least 4 coasters with this burner using tdk dvd-r 2x media. I got the coasters using ulead movie factory and also using record max and nero after taking a dvd to dvd-r with dvd2one.

What is the current firmware on this burner? I've only had it about a month and haven't upgraded the firmware or looked a lot into it. Will a firmware upgrade fix this issue? Is this a known issue with this burner?

The Sony system is basically a +R writer, but with support for -R. same way the pioneer 106 is a -R writer but with support for +R. You should maybe have a go with some +R discs and see if that solves your problem. if it doesnt, check the media you are using. I always recommend Ritek G04's.
