I have tested nine different types of DVD-R disc using DVDSpeed. This tool reads the disc after burning and produces a graph of two lines, the smoothness and completeness of which is a good indicator of the quality of the disc at playback. All discs were written using the Pioneer 105 writer. It is not possible to reproduce the different graphs here so I have devised a scale to which the results were accorded:
10. Excellent (smoothe lines)
9. Very Good (virtually smoothe lines)
8. Good/Very Good (Smoothe lines with very few minor distortions)
7. Good (Mostly smoothe lines with ocassional mostly minor distortions).
6. Fair/Good (Mostly smoothe lines with some moderste distortion).
5. Fair (intermittent smoothe lines with some moderate to servere distortion)
4. Fair/Poor (Continuously moderately distorted but complete lines)
3. Poor (Very distorted but complete lines)
2. Poor/Very Poor (Distorted incomplete lines)
1. Very Poor (Very distorted incomplete lines)
0. Forget it. (Short incomplete or absent lines).
This experiment is not meant to produce conclusive data on disc quality but I believe is a fair indicator of what to expect. I found a score of 7 was critical in that anything above this would ussually mean good clear playback whereas anything below this could give problems such as intermittent 'freezing'.
