Ok I understand after numerous hours of reading all the post about how important good media is, now on to speed and drive.
I have a Lite-On 832s and a Lite-On 165H6S does it make a difference which one I rip from or burn to?
What speed should I use when burning to get the best quality.

Use good media, burn speed that is recommended used to be half the recommended speed but media has improved and I would not go lower than 4x. As for a higher speed I have done some at 16x but feel more comfortable at 8x, no errors or coasters at that rate. As for the output quality that has more to do with the amount of compression than anything else. I have not noticed an difference in quality between my old NEC 1300a that burns at 4x only and my newer Plextors that burn at 16x. Lite-on is a decent make and it should not matter which you use, it is all in your preference and what you see.

arniebear,
I just made a copy of the Notre Dame 1978 Cotton Bowl using 1Click DVD Copy 5. It took 9 minutes to rip and 8 minute to burn on the 165H6S using Verbatim LightScripe 16x disk at 8x is that about the right about of time it should take. The copy came out perfect.
thx again

The Lite-On 832s came with my computer and until a couple months ago all I had done was burn some music cd's. Then I joined netflix and wow have I burned some DVDs, but really had no real knowledge until I had a problem and came to AD. Thanks to everyone here I am leaning a little as I go with much better quality than I was getting before. So much so I had to buy the Lite-On 165H6S so that I would have two burners.
The biggest thing I have learned so far is I was using crap media. I have switched to verbs and am going to try T Y as some point.
Thx again for all the help.

alamo55,
Video quality is really determined by the amount of compression (the less the better) and utility being used (best being dvd-rb with an encoder). Encoders will always yield a superior product than a transcoder (what most copying/compression utilities are) will. Media, burn speed, and drive make and model really only effects playability and compatability. The video quality (all variables kept the same) should remain the same for different medias, unless of course the media is so shotty that you get pixelation. With poor quality media, although the disc may play back fine for a few months, there is always a good chance of the dye deteriorating over time (dye rot).
As a rule of thumb, always use good quality media (verbatim or taiyo yuden is recommended), burn quality 8x media between 4x and 8x (no faster, no slower) and burn quality 16x media no faster than 12x (8x preferably). Keep your firmware current and your pc clean.
You shouldn't have any problems with either of your litey's. I like mine but prefer my benq for ripping only because it is faster. GL.

@ Mort81
Thanks for the reply. I have switched my media to verbatim as according to everything I read I was using crap before. Now I guess I need to work on my Encoder versus Transcoder knowledge.
