Tubes are drying out, its like the arms for the laser that move it back and forth are'nt lubricated well. It's not your laser that has trouble its the tubes that are holding it.
I recommend you do this, get machine oil you can get it for like 3 or 5 bucks in the hardware store. Get some tools ready to like a small philips screwdriver.
1.Open your PS2 has about 8 screws in the bottem then carefully I mean carefully open the top with removing the ribbon lay it somewhere near, then open the area where the laser is at which is like in the right side has like 4 screws. On the left there's alot of metal which is the heatsink of your PS2. Dont worry about that just focus on the right side.
2.Then take out the tray which has 2 screws near the bottem left, carefully on the left side of the tray lift it up and take it out.
3.Then you'll see 2 tubes holding the laser, and the lens in the middle, remember we need to lubricate the tubes and if you want clean the lens with a little bit of alcohole dipped into a Q-tip and clean the lens carefully and then dry it out with the other side of the Q-tip.
4.Clean out the two tubes holding the laser and then carefully drop some machine oil on it or put some on a Q-tip and put it on the tube either way.
5.Then carefully remember the spot where your laser is located and lift it from the right side where a plastic white piece is holding on to and move the laser back and forth untill it gets smooth and moves back and forth quicker, add some more machine oil if you like, then put the laser where it was before when you picked it up.
6.Just put everything back carefully and there you go no more racking noise.
Hope this little guide helps you.
