Oh Im sorry, I thought you already knew how to do that and just wanted to learn more of the vdub processes...
Well there are a ton of guides out there that can help you with what you need, in fact the afterdawn site offers these kinds of guides. I will assume that you want to compress your DVD movie with the divx codec. Here is the guide:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm
It is a bit outdated but its a great starting point for people just starting out.
This next link will take you to the whole list of guides that the afterdawn site offers. If you dont want to encode to divx try the xvid guide or maybe you want a vcd/svcd there are guides for that too.
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles
Good Luck.

I will try again... I have had my dvd player for only 7 days now.... Somehow I fluked out and got one copy of the movie (1 gig) but wanted to play around so I have now spend over 20 hours trying to do the movie again without any luck... I keep getting to "open the audio menu and..." but there is NO audio menu in the program!! This is followuing the xvid guide on this site.... Why cant one program just do everything instead of using 10 differnet programs !?!?!?!?!?!
thanks guys and I will try this again using divx and see if I can make it work... I now have THIRTY TWO (32) different dvd programs installed on my computer -- following guides -- to encode this movie but nothing is working !!

You can find the audio menu in the avi menu. WHen you say dvd player, do you mean hardware or a dvd-rom? And 32 programs!!! thats waaay too much if your just going to rip a dvd and compress it. Useful programs to keep are:
a dvd ripper preferably smartripper or whatever is to your liking.
dvd2avi to create your .d2v files.
vfapi convert if youre going straight to vdub and need the dummy avi.
vdub/vdubmod to encode movie.
avisynth(optional) if you want to framserve your .d2v file and add filters from there. (if you choose to use avisynth to framserve your d2v file you can skip the vfapi part of the process...this way you can have more quality by staying within the dvd native color space(yv12) but only version 2.5 and above.)
Im curious as to what other dvd programs you have in your system...
Good Luck._

Hi powrdup, I just bought my FIRST DVD player for my computer last wednesday, june 18. I have gone through I dont know how many guides to JUST TO MAKE A DVD MOVIE A MOVIE ON MY HARD DRIVE - I can worry about splitting later but I just want a watchable movie at this time --
other programs I have installed include:
eazy vcd
codecs - xvid, divx, etc, etc, etc
dvd ripper
dvd copy plus
dvd2avi, dvd2vcd,
dvdeo
dvshrink
gordianknot
vfapi converter and plugins
virtual dub AND the mod
xvid and codecs, and calculators galore.
smart ripper,
power dvd
tmpenc
etc etc etc
these are all program I am told to install in order to follow these guides -- and people wonder why I am confused as why it is so complicated !!!
I am trying this dvd2svd right now and see if it works....
I have now been working on Spiderman, disk 1 for 9 days -- and I have used up over 20 GIGS of harddrive space for all the different file formats !!
thanks for you help!!

Lol i can see why youre so confused.
Wow 20 gigs thats a lot, im not sure if thats normal with creating svcds but it still seems like a bit much. To make it easier on yourself you should ask what you plan later on with your movie after you've made a copy on your drive. Do you want to watch it on a standalone dvd player?, in which case svcds are the way to go, or do you plan to just watch the movie on your computer, if so id really recommend encoding with the divx or xvid codecs. I mean you can fit more movie on a cd by encoding with divx / xvid than you can by making an svcd, if you decide to burn it on a cd and create space on your drive. Plus in my opinion, divx / xvid encoding have better quality than svcds when using similar bitrates.
Well hope you can work things out.
Good Luck.

If its no trouble for you to do this id recommend that you trash everything that youve done and start fresh....maybe you could even reinstall your OS but that may be too much. SO yeah everything you have done right now just trash it and start fresh...Use the divx guide on this site:
http://www.nanomessiah.com/DVD-To-DivX.html (for creating divx movies thatll fit on one cd)
or
http://www.nanomessiah.com/2xCD-DivX.html (for creating divx movies that span 2 cds.)
Uninstall all programs except the ones that are needed in the above guides.
Good Luck.

I will let you know!!
Also, to let you know that I still cannot find an audio menu in Virtualdubmod....
You said it was in the avi menu, but there is no such thing in my version, at least.
I have 1.5.1.1a - all inclusive for the mod

Are you sure you checked the:
Don't run this job now; add it to job
control so I can run it in batch mode
in both the first pass and nth pass?
So did the video come out all right? does it look good?
Im assuming that you need help in adding the audio to your video. Did you try to use NANDUB as the guide suggested?
Dont use VirtualDub to add the audio...only because you have vbr(variable bitrate)mp3 and vdub doesnt handle vbr audio well... thats why the guide suggested NANDUB. Vdubmod could handle vbr easily as well but im not too sure where the audio menu is in your version of vdubmod...Although i read a post of yours where you asked about it and one of the members, pelltu gave you an answer.

I cannot make it work following any of the guides from this site... I downloaded a program called dvd2svd and that seems (using the exact same program I have installed right now) to make everything just hunky dorey.
I dont know why this doesnt work but I have almost given up hope on the guides on this site. I have followed both the xvid and the divx and neither of them work the way the guides say they should work...
