I've never burned any of my 8X DVD+R Maxell (MIJ by Hitachi Corp.) at 12X. Those Maxell MIJ are top notch media, I've used them over hundreds and hundreds and I've never encountered any playback issues whatsoever. If your burner is capable/supported 12X, then it won't hurt to experience it, but I won't recommend it a "green light". The choice is yours.

I have burnt my Maxell 8x (MIJ) media at 12X. At first, I was thrilled at the speed and quality. That soon turned to disappointment when certain titles did not work in ALL of my players. I would get pausing, voices out of sync, then it would race forward. Never happened in the same spot, checked for CRC errors, nothing. This happened on our newer players. Only when I redid, from the original, at a lower speed was the problem resolved.

That is my experience.

"overburning" media is not usually recommended ie. burning faster than the rated speed of the media~ :)

just because your drive is CAPABLE of burning faster than the rated speed of said media, whether high quality or not, i would NOT recommend doing so...

i've done many "overburns" in the past only for testing purposes and to see for myself what issues MAY be found while doing so, while i have a few Taiyo Yudens that came out "decent" burning faster than rated speed, it's not something i would do on a regular basis PERSONALLY~ :)

docTY

p.s. i would NEVER recommend anyone "overburn" media on a consistent basis unless they are very experienced in tweaking/adjusting firmware/QSuite/Solidburn/etc. software and have found a "sweet spot" for their own setups where overburning produced consistently GOOD results~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Hey Dr TY nice to see you !

I use TYG01 / TYG02 / TYG03 (DVD-R) and personally never burn above 4x.

Put the media in the drive, and walk away.
I'm in no hurry :)

PiPo Scan all come out 95%+ all the time !

My 2 cents worth...

Those benqs will overburn majority of 8x media at 12x and 16x with sony +8x speed media. Those Q's will fly. Those maxells should code as Maxell-002-00 and are very good.

I accidentally left the burn speed set a max burn and burned a few at the max speed of 16x on some Yuden000-T02 and SonyD11. Turned out ok,but I wouldn't try too many. The overburn protection of Qsuite took care of that on my 1640 and 1650. No overburn protection option for both my 1620's,which is a major issue with my single drive pc.

Here's something to try if anybody doesn't have disc scanning programs:

Use your normal backup process. Re-rip one of those questionable backups, like you would if you want to make another copy of it. Rip that backup onto your harddrive. If you can successfully get it onto your harddrive, then you'll be ok. Any major errors on that backup disc, and you'll get a crc error. Abort the burn. Make sure you have extra harddrive space for those files to go.

For me,a backup copy isn't worth a hoot if I can't re-rip them later.

basquiat-what the Other members have said I would echo with the addendum of If you really need /want to burn faster than 8x then buy some 16x media & or a new drive with the prices dropping on both you would probably come out better ! I rarely burn over 8X but I realise what works for me & my setup may not fit your needs or requirements or your system - In the long run it's your call ! to quote cougar_ii " Put the media in the drive, and walk away.
I'm in no hurry :) "You pays your money & takes your chances ! Whatever course you choose basquiat Good luck & happy burning !Ciao!

Yep, I was using DvdXCopy(RF) at the time. I couldn't control the speed, which XCopy picked as the fastest available speed - 12X. So now I have a program which can control the speed and my Maxell 8X MIJ's are burnt at 4X. All is well!

This was 1 big negative on the software.

As you said, today we have several good working alternatives !

I consider myself so fortunate to find out early, that my XCopy backups done on my new 16X burner didn't work in all players.

Yes, the alternatives are so much better!!
