hI, I have windows installed on 6G partition on 40G hard disk. Now Im buying a 200g fast disk, is it somehow possible to transfer my entire windows with all the programs etc. to new hard disk, so windows boots on that fast hard disk? Some would think that making the new drive as C: and copu Everything from old C to it does the trick , cause dont wanna update endless fixes again to sp2 not to mention tens on programs?Please help"

The only way i can think of doing this is by going to:

1. Accessories>System files>Files and System settings Transfer

That program should let you transfer the system to another hard drive. It will take you through a wizard.

You could try that, it should work. You'll have to put both the HDD's on a different computer which already has a HDD with an OS in it, then create the partition on your new HDD, copy
E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G (including hidden files, system files, locked files etc) to the root drive of your new HDD, then remove both the HDDs from the other computer, reconfigure the jumper settings to 'primary' for the new HDD and 'secondary' for the older one, plug it in YOUR computer in the appropriate jacks, and boot up.

I must mention that I've never done this before. Although I really don't see any reason why it shouldn't work, but if I were you, I would reinstall a fresh copy of windows on the new HDD.(If you don't know how to, please ask) Or I would just leave it the way it is, and simply attach the new HDD and use it.

Dont do it that way. Use a program called Acronis True Image. It automatically makes an exatt copy of your old drive onto your new drive, byte by byte. That way, you are guaranteed to have an exact copy.

The only way to do this without any snags would be to use Borhan's method.
The only other viable option is to do a fresh reinstall of windows and all programs, and to then transfer all the old data and settings from your old harddrive to the new one.

@The_Fiend: Whats wrong with using Acronis? Its a drive imaging tool that couldnt be easier to use. It replicates your old drive onto your new drive. The drives dont even have to be the same size.

I've never had a problem cloning drives or partitions with Norton Ghost. I install new disc as a slave, I always fdisk the new disc to create partion(s) format them then use ghost to clone, I never let the machine restart, just turn it off, remove the original re set the jumpers if fitted and re-boot. Maybe I have been lucky, but it works for me.
