Premiere slow playback issue

I use adobe premiere 2.0 to edit videos. Whenever i playback my video in editing mode it goes slow and choppy. I checked my system for viruses and spyware, and defragmented my system but it still didnt help it. Is there anything i can do to optimize my system without buying anything? If i cant than what can i buy for my IBM Thinkpad R51?

RAM: 512MB
Intel Pentium M processor 1500MHz: speed 598MHz
Windows XP
