I have a Sony DRX-500ULX external. It supports both formats, and it's working great. It will recognizes the media - or +, you don't have to do anything.

If you can afford one that supports both types that's fine but the standard is -R and this gives better compatibily with stand alone players plus the discs are cheaper to buy. At the moment The Pioneer 105 seems to offer the best value around.

Check out support pages form the venor. There are drives that get tons of support form the manufacturer and others barely ever get a firmware update. Of course there is also the hack community that contributes firmwares that allow you to burn specific media at a faster speed. Who knows, by that time you will be able to purchase DVD writers for as much as CDRW drives and the technology will be way advanced.
I have the Pioneer 105 as well, simply because it was a good deal and I have read a lot of good stuff about it. If you are scared about where the market is heading with the media + or -, then you might be better off using a drive that supports both media. Even though + is considered superior to -, the - media won't just disappear from the market. Like with most things the manufacturer has to support a standard for a specific time (I believe it is 7+ Years) before the support or production can be stopped.
Listen to me now and believe me later

ballen1,
I use Sony and Verbatim disks. My stand alone DVD player is Sony DVP-S330, it's about 3 or 4 years old. I thought i might have problem with different formats, but guess what, it plays everything - or + disks. By the way, don't use K hypermedia -R disk with this burner, it doesn't work.

Im not sure what your question is. The difference with the A05 and the 106 is that the 106 is dual format (-/+) recording. The reason its not an A06 is due to it not being released as a retail version yet, 106 is OEM (bare drive on its own).

Pioneer are the best, the Ritek media are the best, you have gotten a good machine there. Whether or not you have gotten a good deal still remians to be seen. You can get a DVR106 for £169 ($235). Did you get this sort of price?

£217 is a bit expensive, but still ok with the 10 riteks and shipping.
Anyway there are two options for me. (read through the forums and you'll find this info)
1). DVD Shrink to rip and compress the DVD and then burn with Record Now Max 4.50 or Nero 5.5.10.35
Here is a guide on DVD Shrink: http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink.htm
2). DVD Decrypter to rip, DVD2One to compress and the same two burning programs.
When burning make sure you put the ripped and compressed files into a folder called VIDEO_TS and burn the whole folder to disc, dont open it in the Burning program.
