Problems playing DVD+R

I am attempting to transfer my collection of VHS tapes to DVD but have too many to worry about creating fancy menus,titles etc. Therefore I decided the easiest way to copy them was by purchasing a DVD recorder and hook this straight to my VCR for direct copies.
I purchased a Liteon DD-A100X. I have just copied a movie from video to DVD+R using this and finalised it. This plays fine in the Liteon recorder and in my Computer DVD drive but when played in my Daewoo DVD/VCR combi the picture freezes for a fraction of a second every 10 seconds then carries on. Also when skipping forward chapters the video and audio are out of sync for a few second when it starts playing but then seems to correct itself. Any ideas?

Ricoh DVD+R Ultra Speed - I forgot to say I have copied using my DVD burner in the PC and the Daewoo DVD plays them fine.

it sounds like the DVD-recorder u purchased might not like the Blank media u r using.
well u can try and reduce the speed of ur burns too see if that helps.
One way to rule the media out as the problem is to try a better more consistent brand like
Verbatims, Taiyo Yuden(Online), Sony(MIJ), Maxell(MIJ),
Fuji(MIJ) (MIJ)=made in Japan

Sounds more like your Daewoo player doesn't like your Lite-on recorder's backups.Could be media quality,or a slew of other possibilities.Also don't burn all the way to the outer edge of the blanks.
You've got different burners,therefore your stand alone player is telling you something is wrong with the backups from the lite-on stand alone recorder.
Get some quality +RW media.
Try burning a movie on your litey using +RW media. Then see if your pc drive will recognize it.There's a chance it may not recognize it-making it a compatability issue. If it recognizes those +RW backups, then use a program like DVD Decrypter in ISO mode and burn them with your pc burner.Note: Those exact issues can be caused by certain Burn engines.Again,the picky players can detect the differences between burners and burn programs.
Then you could erase those +RW's and start another movie.
Last resort: Try a lens cleaning in that daewoo player. I consider this a last resort before drive replacement.If everything else fails,try a lens cleaning disc. These discs can knock the laser lens out of alignment and ruin them.

DVD-R : typically read in any dvd player since it is "older" technology
DVD+R : will not read in all dvd players, namely some "off-brand" players such as daewoo/apex/sanyo/etc

Thanks for all this info guys - haven't had time over the last two evenings to pursue this further.
I had thought of processing the movie through DVD Decrypter and have ripped this to my hard drive but haven't yet had time to burn to a disc to try in the stand alone decks. I am also intending to purchase some good quality DVD-R media to try since I had read about the fact they were 'more compatable' with decks. I'll try all these and report back but as I said my confusion arose from the fact I had burned these same DVD+R discs in my PC burner and they worked fine.

If the DD-A100X and the computer drive read the recorded discs, the evidence points to (but does not convict!) the Daewoo DVD/VCR combo unit. If you MUST play the discs in this unit, there are two methods you can try, but both are expensive (and probably more expensive than picking up a new, inexpensive DVD player). 1) Copy the recorded DVD program onto a DVD-R disc and see if that plays in the Daewoo. It may, since the Daewoo may adhere to the older DVD Forum standards. 2) Copy the recorded DVD program onto a DVD+R disc with its bit-setting switched to "DVD-ROM." I'll bet that works. This does mean two copies of every conversion you make, but it is still faster and easier than building menues and transcoding VHS files.

Thanks for the extra info Joeryan - Having messed around for the last couple of evenings I think I now agree with you on the Daewoo being the culprit. I found another DVD player to try a disc on and it played OK! Unfortunately the lady of the house won't let me sentence the Daewoo to death so I'll try your copy suggestions - apart from the time element I dont see this as a problem since I can record on to a RW in the Lite-on then copy to a DVD-R or DVD+R using the PC burner - does this sound OK? Where would I set the 'bit setting' you suggest for the DVD+R? Thanks.

Skipping, freezing, distortion, etc. is caused by poor media/blank or burning too fast. Try to lower your burning speed i.e. 4X - 8X with some top notch media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell (MIJ by Hitachi Corp.) and you'll be all square away.
DVD+R issue? If your burner is capable or supported "booktyping or bitsetting", then it's best to booktype all DVD+R or DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM. Yes, DVD-ROM is the best and or most compatible format to play in all functional standalone dvd players.

The symptoms described by pagey179 could be due to any number of causes. Poor media or poor recordings are only two of dozens of causes and, given the evidence, less likely in this case. There is no reason to make a sales pitch.

Not all dvdrw drives are capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom (aka known as bitsetting). What make and model dvdrw drive do you have? I agree bitsetting would be a good option to try but it is not a 100% gauranteed fix. There are so many variables.

Alkohol - thanks for the suggestions but I am sorry I'm not convinced the the media is the problem, neither is the burning speed - this is another problem which I need to sort out - it burns at less than 1x, typically 0.8 or 0.9x(!)- and I had thought of bitmapping.
Unfortunately Mort81 you are right - I looked up bitmapping and found typically Sony burners cannot be modified - what do I have, yes you've guessed it a Sony burner! It is incdicated however that Sony don't make drives and merely re-badge Lite-on's. I have found a cross reference for my Sony (DW-Q30A) with a Lite-on but I am wary about trying to load new firmware for fear of wrecking the burner altogether! It's getting to the stage of giving up and buying a load of VCR's to store in the loft and use as I need them!!!

Thanks Mort81, I will try the bookmark using DVDdecrypter and I will take other advice on-board about using good quality media.
I have now gained access to another DVD player which again plays the recorded DVD's OK therefore my Daewoo and the other player which started all this thread off are under sentence of death!! Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.
