Alright, so I have experienced the highs and lows of being a PS2 owner. Now is one of those lows, as I currently don't have a functioning unit. I do however have a nice hard drive filled with games that I want to play.
Here is where my question comes in. I am living in Japan, and have no means of securing a working PS2 from the US. Thus, I have decided to buy a used unit over here. I finally found a place that sells the "fat" ones, and have a choice between the 37000, 50000, and 55000. The price range is from $130-$150 (increasing with model number). I have verified that all the models will work with HDA 3. I used my harddrive with (english version) HDA 2, (also formatted it, and loaded games with HDA 2) and want to be sure that "upgrading" to HDA 3 will not screw up the games on my HD. I don't suppose that such a problem could occur, but I want to play it safe.
While writing this post, I just became aware of something else that could really screw me over. The games I have on my harddrive are a mix of japanese and american games. My previous PS2 had a modchip, which would have bipassed any region problems. If I were to buy a Japanese PS2 though, it wouldn't have a modchip, and would only be loading games from the harddrive. Would the American games be able to load with the HDA 3 software? Hmm... this is becoming a bit more complicated....
Damned companies and their freaking regional lockout codes. Absolutely ridiculous. All in the name of tracking profits. Just reminds me how much I hate big business.
Anyways, does anyone have any expertise in the area that my question(s) were trying to fit into?
