Heard today that the big cats in the music industry have decided to prosecute individual users downloading from p2p sites and are warning everyone against doing it. Opinion seems to be that this is little more than a scare tactic. I have sympathy for the few hundred or so poor bastards who are likely to face huge fines though - they are nothing but scapegoats. Whilst I have no sympathy for anyone selling or running a business out of downloading music I think the record companies are playing fowl. A 7% reduction in profits is hardly going to dent their wallets even if internet downloading was proved to be responsible. We all know consumers have been ripped off for years to line the pockets of the big companies and record companies have only got themselves to blame for not keeping up with technology anyway until it was too late. Most people still buy CD's and trying to prosecute individuals from downloading is hardly going to do anything positive. Why don't they just accept that the price of a CD will never be the same again and for most people that's welcome news. What do you think?

Correct me if i'm wrong. It is illegal to Serve or Share Music file from your Computer, but it's not illegal to download them. Is this statement correct if not please correct me??

No it is illegal to download music from a p2p site not to share it, though by definition you are sharing it too. I wouldn't worry too much though since if you are using the p2p sites for your own use you are very unlikely to be detected let alone face any penalties. The record companies know this. One of the main reasons I think this warning has gone out is because a recent ruling failed to prosecute a p2p website who argued that what people do by using their site is entirely up to them. So now the companies feel frustrated and have resorted to detective work to seek 'evidence' against individuals who download music to trade for profit.

Nicely said and in the same year dvd sales went up 42% or something like that so that is one of the main reasos behind the 7% drop, people had a choice of a cd or dvd and selected the dvd!
As for the main thing said on this thread, some people will get fined yes and the funny thing is a lot of them will probably have a huge cd collection already and will they ever buy again after the fine?? i dont think so!

I am pretty new to the internet world but I do have a technical question. If we are sharing "Music" via p2p networks, then aren't we actually just sharing bits and bites rather than actual music? Just curious. Love this site btw!

It is a copy of copyrighted material so basically it is still illegal whether it is data or not! I dont share music though!

yeh but that can also be argued that purchasing or gettin a musin CD containing music is also a wav file that is in bits and bytes so
dont think that arguement is strong enuff

theres too many people out there using p2p to share things
its gonna be impossible to use or prosecute a couple of individuals for what over a billion people do
thats going to be unfair in its own right

Ah well someone will get fined/sued, maybe a lot of people but the RIAA dont realise they are sueing customers, lol, war on the american customers!!

What I find hilariouse is that back before the music industry got it's panties in a knot about MP3's, they were preaching to everyone from their soapbox about the evil of USED CD's! They were pissed because record stores were making money off the resale and not paying them! I just think that it's funny because they completly forgot about it once they had something else to entertain them and their obsenely rich clients.

What can we do? There is nothing that we, the individual consumers, can do to defend ourselves against the high powered Corporate beast the RIAA is. But there should be. My country, the US of A , is based on the principle of freedom.... thats FREE-dom, key word free. I understand total freedom would be anarchy, of which i do not support, but total control is not freedom, but rather, quite the opposite. Any attempt to ward off these deep pocketed powers would be swiftly and fiercly stopped, leaving us defensless. There has to be something we can do legally, other than sit here and take a beating from the powers above. I only pray this lockdown on innocents will end, and i beg for our authorities (no, not the authorities in the record companies, the powers that we elect into office) to come to our aid in defeating this nemesis that we, the average citizens, cannot defend itself against. Talking will get us nowhere, petitions will accomplish nothing, breaking the law will land you in a prison to rot, or throw you penniless into the streets. So I repeat, What can we do?
