Does my Canon Elura support true anamorphic 16:9?

I have a Canon Elura MiniDV (the original model), and it has a 16:9 mode. When I record in this mode, the LCD displays a horizontally compressed picture. I've read elsewhere that most camcorders do not support true 16:9 and you lose resolution by using that mode. Does anyone know if the Elura will record a true anamorphic 16:9 signal that can be displayed in all it's glory on a widescreen TV? TIA... Dave
