Presario SR1720NX will not recognize CD in drive

My presario came with CD burning software, I am not sure which one, which acidentally got removed and now I cannot burn CDs, even with other burning programs I downloaded. I keep getting error messages telling me to insert a CD into drive E and then when I hit burn or create, the CD just gets ejected. I cannot even make a recovery CD. Does anyone know if I reinstall whatever CD burning program (I believe it was Sonic Digital Media or Record Now, will that fix the problem, or do I need to do something else. I am not advanced in this stuff, so don't throw too much technical stuff at me please. If anyone has any questions or suggestions for me, I would appreciate it. Also, it will run CD's like MS word and anything that comes with data on it already, but I can't play music CD.s.
