Hi I downloaded an avi file and I'm wanting to edit it a bit. I get this message when its opened in VirtualDub (any version). In fact it happens with lots of avi files I download.

"VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source avi file. This may introduce up to 88967ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unnacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed wav file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (155.6 +/- 36.6kbps)."

Well I did just that. I extracted the audio from the avi, into an uncompressed wav. Then used CDex to recompress it to a 160kbps riff-wav.

I then opened up the original avi, and subsituted the avi audio for my new 160kb audio. I then direct streamed the audio and video into a new avi file with Vdub.

The first 15mins of video is in sync with the audio, but after that things go out and I've got the speech being said 9secs before the person actually says it.

So how can I fix this situation?
Cheers :)

Im not sure but if you still have the original AVI the one with vbr audio, try opening it up in vdubmod.

Thanks Powerdup. I downloaded Vdubmod. It has the option where I can tell vdub not to rewrite the header and cause the audio out of sync. That works fine and I can edit the video without causing problems.

Still doesn't fix the supposedly bad VBR audio though? I tried extracting an uncompressed wav audio file with vdubmod, and I can't find the settings for it anywhere? It doesn't even have an audio menu?

--

One other problem: I'm cutting some junk out of another AVI video and then I direct stream copy the audio and video. Strangely when I play the newly created file, the deleted stuff is still in there?? Tried 4different versions of Vdub, still won't get deleted?! grrrrr.

--

Problem 3: When cutting stuff out of an AVI, can you smooth the transition from the previous frame into the next one. So you don't get this sort of cut-out sort of effect. (So you can't notice anything was cut out) ???

The audio isnt bad its just that vdub doesnt handle it well, thats why i suggested vdubmod which can.

You can mux audio under Streams and in stream list.

Did you cut along the keyframes?
You can do this by holding the shift key and dragging the slider with the mouse over to the beginning of the part you want cut after that press the home key. Then holding shift key again drag the slider to the end of the part you want to cut and press the end key...the selected part will be highlighted in blue( in vdub its blue not sure about vdubmod). Go to the edit menu and select delete selection. then save as avi.

NOTE: remember to have ditect stream copy selected for audio and video.

Thanks guys :) Your a lot more friendly than the people at VirtualDub forums!

Cutting at keyframes works, but its not that accurate. What if there are frames inside the key one that I want to keep?
Theres not a way you can turn an ordinary frame into a key frame? ;)

Last Problem:
When cutting stuff out of an AVI, can you smooth the transition from the previous frame into the next one. So you don't get this sort of cut-out sort of effect. (So you can't notice anything was cut out) ???

Thanks very much!

You can only cut froma key frame which kinda sucks but its better than nothing and there really is no way to hide the cut out at all!

This isn't the same problem, but it's a problem with AVI to dvd.
I have an xvid file which I want to convert to mpeg2, author and put onto a dvd (I think 'xvid' is the problem - I haven't had this problem with divx). I think the best thing to do is to decompress the audio first with Virtual Dub before converting the AVI to mpeg, but with this particular file I always get this error message in Virtual Dub : "The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and the channel count of the input match those of the requested format."
I don't really understand this. Can anyone help ?
