i heard from a guide at vcdhelp.com that when converting an avi to mpeg2 (dvd format) that if the avi is a divx, then you MUST extract the audio using virtual dub and load it in separately, is this true??

It really depends on the audio. If, as usual nowadays, the audio is in AC3 format in the DivX, you actually need to strip it out from AVI (GraphEdit or similiar) into separate file and keep it like that (as it is already DVD compliant). If the audio is in MP3 format, you need to extract it using VirtualDub as DVD doesn't support MP3s, but MP2s instead, and need to re-encode the audio into DVD compliant format like 48kHz MP2 (note the freq). If the audio is already in MP2 format with 48kHz freq, there's no need to do this. On in raw PCM WAV with 48kHz, same thing, you don't need to strip it out.

This is at least how I've understood the process.

on your divx file, how do you find out what format your audio is in so you know what you need to do?
