I've been hearing tons of messages with a reference to "firmware." Can somebody please explain to me the importance of this. I have a Dell 4550 with an NEC DVD+RW drive (NEC1100). Thanks in advance.

I also have a Dell with the NEC 1100A burner. They say you should update the firmware/drivers for better compatibility with new DVD+R/+RW media. You can get it here: https://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R59801 The only reason I haven't upgraded my NEC drivers since I bought this Dell is because I've read on the Dell forums that it might actually make some of your DVD discs unreadable. Right now, it works fine for me, so I'm following the motto "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The firmware upgrade on "2nd generation" dvd burners will allow you to burn 4x media safely, but does NOT give you 4x speed. It is worth trying 4x discs, they work well for many. The speed increase between 2.4x and 4x is not all that great, saving about 9 minutes per disc. It may work well for you. Remember, if you figure just the rate of data flow, 4x on DVD equals 36x on CD. If you can easily sustain a clean CD burn rate at 36x, you should be able to do 4x on DVD. The easiest way to tell your burn speed is to see how long it takes to burn the DVD. 1x=55min. 2x=28min. 2.4x=24min. 4x=15min. All times are approximate.

UPDATE
i updated my Dell / phillips . it is now compatible with 4x media . i burned the matrix in 24 mins on express thats still 2.4x
I backed up a concert movie on dvd x copy and it was ok too
now that thats done i sugesst the tdk +r 4x
