Hi.

A combo drive usually reads DVDs and CDs, but burns only CDs.

A DVD writer/burner both reads and burns both DVDs and CDs.

Hi. I guess this is what you're looking for for info.

There are two formats for DVDs, + and -. Most modern players play both formats. Disks designated as +R and -R are write once media. They can only be written to one time. +RW and -RW media are rewriteable which means they can be re-recorded/re-burned. Disks are also single layered (4.5GB) or dual layered (8.5GB).

I use +R disks most of the time because they can be booktyped to DVD-ROM which is the format of commercially mastered DVDs. This enhances their playablility in players that might balk at playing the disk otherwise. For single layer disks, it's not as big an issue as a few years ago as almost all players recognize and play both formats, +R and -R. However for +R DL disk (double layer disks), many players will not play them unless they are booktyped as DVD-ROM.

If you buy dual layer disks, stick with Verbatim. They are the best by far. For single layer disks, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Fuji and Sony disks labeled as Made in Japan are the best quality.

I personally prefer ImgBurn for burning DVDs.

Here's some links to guides explaining DVD backups.
