This morning when I restarted my comp for some odd reason Windows XP did not automatically initiate. Instead a black screen appeared with options of which included "last known configuration" which I tried several t even select a safe mode to get things running. This emachines T1440 came with everything installed therefore I have no Windows XP disc. I tired turning the machine off, with fingers crossed some miracle would happen, but when I flipped the switch again, the same screen, frozen, appeared to my dismay.

I have been searching on this laptop for solutions and thought that I would inquire on this forum for some support . . . thanks in advance for your assistance

Hi there, have a look at these web pages they are very informative and have helped me out a lot in the past. The recovering of a system can be difficult and time consuming. However you will need access to the windows recovery console that I assume hasn't been installed on your machine. If you have access to a windows xp disc (ie borrow from a colleague or friend) then you can boot from there to affect the repair.

I hope these are of some help.

To be honest all the machines I have had the misfortune to use this on have had no passwords set up.If yours had no password, have you just tried returning with no password entered?
If it needs one, there are ways around this problem. I have tried googling forgotten administrator password xp recovery console and there are a few links there. Some suggest using windows 2000 boot disks to access the recovery console. here is a link to a boot disk that may help http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ just read it thoroughly and understand the risks.
Other than that I am out of ideas, maybe one of the other guys here would like to step in....cheers. Pete.
