PLAYS IN DVD PLAYER, XBOX360, PS2 & EVERYTHING ELSE BUT THE COMPUTER. The dvd drive in my computer says no disk present when it's in there, tried Nero, shrink dvdfab, none show disk present. Took it out and copied curious george and a few others today and had no problems. anybody know a fix? never had this happen so i'm a little lost.

hey kris29. sorry i can't help. that sounds very peculiar. i'll be getting that disk later today and let you know what my experience is. i'll be watching this thread to see what kind of solution people come up with for your problem of only your computer drive not recognizing the disk. hmmmmm?

hey kris29.
i guess it was worth a try getting a new replacement (though if all your other hardware reads it....). very odd that your other readers recognize it but not the computer dvd drive. it might be something simple, but i sure don't know what it would be. there is another thread here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/399443#2407425
about someone having the same non-recognition problem with an unnamed dvd... but the only responders so far have interpreted what the original poster said as referring to a burned dvd (rather than the original commercial dvd) that is likely of poor quality media. no response from original poster whether that is a correct interpretation. i read it as being the same problem as yours... commercial dvd not readable/recognized on computer drive. i will go back there and post this thread so people in either thread can refer to the other in case someone comes up with a solution.
i'm in hawaii and won't have my "lake house" until later this afternoon, but i will let you know what my experience with it is.
let us know if you figure something out.

just for clarification, your burner is recognizing and reading other commercial current release disks, correct? and is burning backups without incident of other disks?

oh... why don't you rip it using your dvd rom? then just burn the finished file with your burner right off the hard drive? not sure what programs you are using. let us know if that works and what software you use... i highly recommend that you use VobBlanker after dvdfab and prior to shrink if you use that method (as mentioned in your first post)...

yes it reads commercial current release disks all brand new and purchased today, i did curious george and fast and furious tokyo this morning right when i tried lake house, i got them all together from the same place. I put curious goerge in and it reads it take it out and throw in lake house it's dead nothing at all, no auto play from windows no software which i previosly wrote says it's there. I open up just the dvdrw in my computer and there is nothing in the file once opened which it should show what the dvd is contents etc. Usally disney movies will stump me a bit but this takes the cake.

I just backed up my copy of THE LAKE HOUSE...no problems. I used DVD Fab, newest version 3.0.1.2, and shrink. My drive didn't have any problems reading the disc.

did you try ripping with your dvd-rom drive (which you said could see and read the disk)? if that one is reading the disk that should work. then you'd only need to use the DVD-RW drive to burn the final post-shrink file.

glad that worked and you have your backup. didn't solve the mystery though. maybe someone will still chime in with why that particular drive won't read that particular disk. someone might suggest making sure you have the latest firmware for the drive, which wouldn't hurt, but not sure that would explain it. is your dvd region 1? just curious so we aren't mixing apples and oranges... sometimes different region disks have different encryption and anti-copy measures.
by the way, if you use ripit4me, or AnyDVD with shrink and imgburn (or dvddecrypter to burn), you can use your dvd-rom to read and have the blank in the DVD-RW drive... start the process and walk away... come back and it's all done. no need to even remove the original and place the blank... in case you're lazy like me... also some people like to use the dvd-rom to read their disks and that way the dvd burner only gets half as much use (only for burning and not reading) and therefore might last a lot longer than if using the burner for both reading and writing.

i usually use DVDFab, then shrink it, then use the any normal burning tool. haven't had problems with this, if that doesn't work, then try re-authoring just the movie, that seems to always work for me.
