No one gets to mod by "sucking - up" - all the mods here are greatly valued members and got to mod by making helpful post etc like Auslander said.
Eg. (sorry for using you as an emample hehe) creaky made it to mod and he joined in jan 05 i think, so just goes to show what good posting being helpful can do for you.

Ok, just to clarify, as far as I know your not going to get a Mod or similar position by being a butt kisser. The Mods don't get paid, although some positions such as "Staff Member" (like Lethal_B) get a salary as far as my knowledge goes.
As to getting one of these positions, you have to apply and if aD is accept positions (paid ones, such as Staff Member) you have to apply just like any other job.
Mods do NOT get paid, they are selected based on (I believe) being knowledgeable, helpful and friendly to other members of the forum.
aD currently has a bundle of Mods so I don't think dRD is gonna see the need for anymore for quite a while.
Currently here is a few of the Mods at aD:
ddp: Made Moderator recently.
creaky: See above
ireland: Been a mod for quite a while
Nephilim: Been a mod sense 2003.
I know aD has many, many more mods, although I can't think of any at the moment.
