I'll add my suggestion for those willing to purchase AnyDVD. If you are willing to purchase AnyDVD which I think is about the best decrypter out right now, you should look at the package price of also buying CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD. I think its $59. as a package. While everyone has been fighting the new encryptions and getting different programs to work together, I have had not 1 problem using CloneDVD and AnyDVD combination. These 2 programs have been working together forever. Quality of the backups are excellent and you can edit with Clone to up the quality if needed. Its just a suggestion but if you are willing to spend $40. for AnyDVD, I suggest the extra $20. for the package. You won't regret it but again just my opinion.

I agree with you Jerry, the combination price for these two programs is great, and the programs work well and the support is good. They are charging more for Xcopy platinum and that is not worth it.

Heh, Heh, I'll bet you don't make a backup with DVD Shrink without a burner.
To make a backup you need 3 things -
A Ripper
Something to encode, compress if needed and to edit if desired.
Something to burn with.
Shrink won't work without a burning program from the outside.
Recode2 won't rip without something from the outside. It even tells you in the tutorial it won't work on copyright discs.
It is so wonderful to hear you pay such close attention during your "Program Tests." I have a valuable suggestion. Don't work anywhere near explosives ~
Cheers,
(Now I'm thinking he'll continue to "trash" an excellent proggy because he doesn't read instructions)

(
Oooppps, My post didn't mean that much as I forgot the catalyst)
Quote: Of course when I decide to go HD then I may have to actually buy a burning program, but as of now I see no major difference in having Nero(which I do) and I never use because DVD Shrink already does everything.
(Reposting now so it makes sense . . .)

Ya, right, you don't use Nero . . then you don't use Shrink . . .

A little addition, DVD43 works well with 2K and XP and handles Sony's ARccOS just fine at a price our non-working friends can afford, FREE

Yes it is in that it operates the same way.
Because AnyDVD is a for $$$ proggy it is updated much more quickly. Faster in fact than any other program of its type on the "net".
Well worth the $$$ BUT if you don't mind having to wait to do some DVD's then use DVD43 -

hey scuba pete or anyone that can help, what is Nero recode2, i have Nero 6, and i'm not sure if thats part of it. Also what is Nero recodes function, i use DVD Shrink then Nero to burn as of right now and i have no problems yet.
And since DVD Shrink doesn't seem to be getting any updates, what do you recommend to replace, i have dvd decryptor, but haven't used it yet, do you recommend AnyDVD or is there something else better, and does the programs you pay for work better or give better quality or are they just not free.

@flash74, i don't use recode2, but shrink, decrypter & Nero is more than good enough for a good while to come. If decrypter doesn't keep up with the protections there's always AnyDVD which is paid for so should stay up to date (hang on Scubapete already said that!).. however there is other software you can use...

Hi there flash74, welcome to aD,
Recode2 is written by the same guy that wrote DVD Shrink. The difference being that Recode2 allows you to edit your movie (in the "Remake a DVD" mode) BUT you still have working menus. Check out the guide - and how to find it located in my sig.
Unlike DVD Shrink Recode2 requires a ripper BUT it does burn the disc for you. I titled the guide, "Decrypter/ Recode2". As you see, DVD Decrypter is used in my guide as a ripper because it's FREE But most pple have and use AnyDVD as a ripper because it is so good. Try ripping your DVD's both ways - with Decrypter OR AnyDVD.
Here is the link for AnyDVD ~ 21-day free trial,
http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html
Enjoy and remember to stop back and let us know how you made out.

Flash74,
Nero Recoder is similar to DVD Shrink but it requires a separate ripping program. Nero doesn't want to get cross ways with the government like the makers of DVD-X-Copy did. The Author of DVD Shrink went to work for Nero last year, thus no more updates on Shrink since July 2004; a full time job trumps no pay any time. It is assumed, based on his former experience, that he was instrumental in writting this application for Nero (Ahead Software).
A new security encoding scheme was implemented on many DVDs last December. DVD Shrink is not capable of decoding this scheme. However, you can use the latest version of DVD Decrypter to rip and decode your movies to a folder on your hard drive. Then you can use DVD Shrink to compress and burn these files to a DVD Blank. That's what the OPEN FILES button does, you normally use the OPEN DISK button. The downside is that the DVD Shrink disk duplication process is no longer a single step process if your copying a DVD that uses the new encoding scheme. DVD Shrink will work stand alone with some of the older movies, you'll have to find a list of movies to determine which ones have the new encoding and which ones don't.
You can use AnyDVD in place of DVD Decrypter to accomplish the encryption decoding. AnyDVD runs in the background so you can continue to run DVD Shrink as before and the magic decoding process is transparent to the user. The only down fall to AnyDVD is that it cost money while DVD Decrypter is still a freebee.

Creaky,
Just thought I'd let you know that I think I've solved the problem I told you about a few days ago. I removed DVD Shrink and Decrypter from my system, ran Registry Mechanic to clean up the registry, rebooted the system, and then re-installed DVD Shrink and Decrypter. I've duped three movies since without any problems. I'm still holding my breath until I complete a few more successful dups but everything seems to be working.

mufin_man, if you don't mind -a little correction ? :)
Actually, we were working on DVD Shrink with Mr. DVDShrink fine tuning the quality enhancements and ironing out a few bugs as late as September (I was a Beta-tester then). Mr. DVD Shrink has stated that should any "bugs arise in the program, he'll be there to fix them. :)
A suggestion; DVD43 has been updated to handle the ARccOS encryptions you spoke of and can work in the background like AnyDVD. I am not sure about the Settec ALPHA-DVD encryption (released Jan 18th, 05) but it does handle the rest. I guess the point is, even dealing with Freeware, we have choices and, as of this date (do we know what's in for us tomorrow?), the Free stuff is so close to the $$$$ programs there's no reason to spend a dime for software. Isn't life grand ?

ScubaPete,
Thanks for the update on DVD Shrink, it appears to be a work still in progress. I have to give Mr. DVD Shrink a round of applause for the continued support of his work, a true perfectionist who wants to see his creation thrive.
I didn't mean to exclude some of the other fine Apps out there. Various folks have put in a lot of hours writing and debugging code to provide these tools and their work is much appreciated.

@mufin_man - Shrink has seen me thru about 500 films so far, all on it's own. It's a fantastic bit o' stuff. Doesn't matter that it won't be updated for the newer protections, it's gorgeous!
