Your riteks should be ok. I would stay away from the cmc mags as they alone can be the cause of your compatability problems not to mention longevity problems.

Ok lets set up dvd shrink. Make sur you have enable burn with nero checked under the edit tab/preferences/file I/O. Then after you have opened disc or file and selected the parts of the dvd you want and set compression levels and so on click backup. Select the target device (your LG drive) and quality settings. Then under the burn settings tab make sure the booktype dvd-rom is checked. You're set.

You can also use nero to automatically booktype dvd+r/rw to dvd-rom if you are burning a folder on your hdd. Click options on the final settings page and then select dvd-rom in the dropdown menu beside booktype then click ok.

Interestingly enough, they could be the same. Verbatim sells/sold media manufactured by TY as well as the MCC, Ricoh, and others. Also, my last batch of Fuji was 8X +R TY media; TY manufactures for a number of brands besides selling under the generic name (as does Ricoh). As for the Ritek RO3, there have been some complaints on it around the forums. Easy check there is use other media and see if the track record improves. Like most forum members, I shy away from CMC. Normally firmware upgrades are painless as long as the guidelines are followed. Normally those having problems either have done something wrong or have one of those drives that can be difficult. You said yours was done before, so that shouldn't be the case with yours. I'd check the firmware. I've updated my Samsung ROM, my Pioneer/Memorex burner and even upgraded the BIOS on my Dell PC without any problems. I even upgraded the firmware on my Philips standalone player. Not a problem with one of them.

You may need to tell the guys about that at the databases that track those changes. http://www.mediamatch.de/showdvdhersteller.php being one of them. Plus tell the guys in the warehouse system they're selling obsolete media. We know that since the 4X +R TY media is an older product (YUDEN000T01), most of the supply of those is dwindling. I was mainly pointing out that TY is one of the manufacturers that sells their product to be sold under various brands. Guess I was lucky to put the sells/sold on that statement because the brands are constantly changing suppliers in a lot of cases. Nothing like a disclaimer. LOL Luckily, the MCC product is something of a staple with Verbatim (the Japanese product anyway, have to be specific for some folks). You'll find MCC also manufactures for various brands. Sony is a company currently handling TY media (YUDEN000T02), good media. Back to personal experience, I was recently using a batch of 8X +R media under the Fuji brand which is TY media. So there I can readily say, those are the same as TY and Sony.

Thanks for the info Creaky. Guess that helps Hemispasm on his finding newer TY media under the Verbatim brand. Good stuff. The TY G02 is the 8X -R and the YUDEN000T02 is the 8X +R discs from TY. Popular media and TY makes it for a number of different brands. The MCC is good stuff as well. I don't think I could make a choice between the 2 unless there was a difference in price.

you're welcome. i had been reading about MCC selling TY before (maybe it was one of your posts, not sure) but didn't think we'd see them in UK yet, so was very surprised to see them, hence why i ordered them instantly. Being a Verb obsessive (have also used a meagre 100 TY so far) i snapped them up and have the utmost confidence in their quality even before they get here...

I would have mentioned a brand selling MCC, as Mitsubishi is a manufacturer and not into retail sales as a separate brand. MCC wouldn't be selling TY as TY is another manufacturer, which is into both manufacturing and retail sales under the generic Taiyo Yuden brand as well as manufacturing for a number of other brands. I might have mentioned Verbatim selling items by both manufacturers. Be wary though, not all Verbatim is premium, their cheaper items are or were CMC manufactured. The Datalife Plus line has been a safe bet so far though; just about anything Verbatim with the AZO dye label on it is good as well.

I know, sorry, forgot to state that I only use datalifeplus, and am always keeping an ear to the ground for any cmc shenanigans. Update, re the new verb ty discs, have just been told they're from china, which I don't believe but am checking it out. There's also a cdfreaks thread I'm participating in at the moment, am gonna ask the question there too

On August 8, saugmon writes:

"Burning at 1.4x and 1.5x sounds like a problem with your ide channels. Btw,if you get 5 or so burn errors in a row-usually crappy media-then windows will automatically revert your ide channels to pio mode. This isn't good. This will slow you down among many other scenarios. You want dma or udma if available."

OK, so my burner (NEC that came with my Dell) is a 4X single layer DVD+R burner, that never had a problem burning at 4X. However, about 6 months ago (probably after some crappy media, as you suggest)it started to write at 2.4X max.

If the problem is with my ide channels, as you suggest, what can I do now to fix it? Anything, short of a firmware replacement/update (which is not possible, as NEC will not support their product in a Dell, much the same way as Microsoft not supporting Windows in an OEM system). Dell has no updates.

Thanks, Mort81.

I found that link after I posted, but it still won't work for me. when I right click, and choose the uninstall option, everything in the box (program) freezes. I've left it for more than a minute, and have to clear it by Ctrl+Alt+Delete and closing the program.

Any way to get windows to do a dirty install for my burner?
