I put all my specs earlier in the thread, but I am running a pioneer A05 with the 2X firmware crack. I ordered a 200 bulk pack of Maxell 2x then canceled the order and they sent them anyway. I decided to try them since I had them and burned 8 coasters and 2 good. I sent them back since the order was canceled anyway. It seems to me that with cheap disks the quality can vary significantly from one production run to another. And I have a question for anyone that may know. How does a company like princo stay in business? Do these disks work for some other application than data for video data storage? I have heard that their 4x disks work very well as long as you only burn them at 2x, at 4x they don't seem to work well.

Zerxez, Princo is very funny. I would burn a 2x on DVD Decryptor, and had nothing but coasters. Take that coaster and make a copy using RecordNow Max, and I had a perfect burn of the Movie. Weird...

As a follow-up to my earlier email
Pioneer A05 v1.0 firmware
Have used DVDitSE and MyDVD
Also use DVDXcopy
I have now tried "Pine DVD-R 2x" and got 5-out-of-5 good ones. Bought them from Future Shop in Ottawa ($18.99 + tax for box of 5). I'll be trying more of these. However, I have only played them in my Panasonic standalone and LG DVD-ROM. I'll be trying them in some friends DVD players shortly and will keep you posted

boriqua,
I used princo 1x rw burned a lilo&stich dvd-r using Pinnacle instant copy played flawlessly then I burned same princo on dvddecrypter and movie freezes 2/3rds of the way. Someone reported to me (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/32726#146955) that it's not dvddecrypter but the disc. If that were the case, then I should have had a problem with the instant copy burn. I still think it's dvddecrypter (well until I get quality media to compare). I had same freeze problem with lead data too.
Cendyne A05, Princo -rw and Lead Data -r 2x, Apex 660 standalone.

Hope this info helps someone?.
I purchased a 30 pack of Verbatim DVD+R disks for $49.95 at Sams Club. I believe that works out to be $1.66 per disk. I have had no trouble with them. I have never used DVD?R disks, nor have I done games (just movies).
My specs:
AMD 1800+
512 RAM
Win 2000
160 gigs HD space
HP 200i burner
I had been burning DVDs to SVCD for about a year, but recently downloaded DVDShrink. Cannot say enough good things about this program. So simple and fast to use. Basically two steps. Rip & Burn. Start to finish process is only about 90 minutes or less. Will take most DVD movies and burn to *1* blank 4.7 gig disk. It keeps all of the menus and extras. Audio and Video are great! Some disks (e.g. Titanic) may be so big that you need to "manually" trim out some extras (like other language tracks) to get them to fit on one disk, but I've only run into a few that required me to do that. I then use Nero version 5.5.10.20 to burn them. I have turned 3 others onto DVDShrink, and none of us has yet made any coasters.
BTW, Dr. Mercury's site (http://www.svcd.cc/) has some great tutorials, with screen captures, on how to use DVDShrink (among many other things). It is well worth a donation.
And while I know that it is off topic (please don't flame me), I notice a lot off discussion about tabletop DVD players. I just picked another DVD player (my 7th) at Wally Mart. The Pioneer DV-250 for $79. It successfully plays my VCD, SVCD, DVD+R and DVD+RW disks (and plays MP3 files too). Has component video & S-video out, optical and coaxial audio also. Nice remote and many features. A great buy!
Just my 2 cents. Hope it can help.

i have DVR104 i have no problems using Verbatim DVD-R 2x, but have had nothing but problems with K-hypermedia 1x DVD-R. I got them at microcenter for 4.96 for a 5 pack, the first 2 five packs worked fine with no coasters. The last few packs i have nothing but coasters. So what is everyones conclusion on the best media for the best price?

In keeping with my own standard, which no one seems to adhere to in a single post (maybe over the course of a few though).
1-I have the Sony DRU-500ax (2.0c)
2-What works are the Sony 1x -R and 1x +R, generic 1x -R (purple dye from Beyond Micro). I know, no surprise about the Sony's.
3-I'm copying my DVD movies, before they all rot.
4-I test on 2 different model Pioneer progressive scan players.
5-I'm in the USA
6-I'm using DVDDecryptor (thus far)
So far the following are not working for me. DVDDecryptor locks at around 40-50%.
-Apple 1x -R (white top with dark green, or is it grey, dye)
-Optodisc Gold 2x (Gold top with purple dye). These are supposed to work, so I'm contemplating going to the 2.0e firmware.
If ANYONE can post the same info, but is having success with Ritek's (2x or 4x) and/or Optodisc (2x or 4x), please submit a similar post and some comments. That would make a ton of us here happy :0)
Thanks gents!

Filberto, your comment about the Apple media is interesting. I just used it for a couple of movies with no problems, although I notice that the dye on mine is purple (I've had these for a while) and I used Nero to actually burn the discs rather than DVD Decrypter.
I'm also using the Sony DRU 500A.

Maybe I'll try it again. Remember, I have an AX with 2.0c. I have 4 more disks left from my 5-pack. I was going to sell them to my buddy with the new iBook.
The dye on these here may be a really deep purple (it's hard to tell what the color is, it's SO dark), but they are nothing like various kinds I've seen and tested thus far, which are all a bright (almost flourescent) purple.

I have
Pioneer 105, sony 500ax
program Passari Primo, DVD Decriptor, Roxio DVD Programs.
Good media and store.
Verbatim, Pioneer, Sony... (etc brand name work)
Fugifilm (found at best buy, they are ok)
Universal Media(good use for PS2)
LG Media (also found at www.dvd-supply.com no one else seems to have it, works awesome and good price for brand name)
Generic TDK (Works in PS2 also)
Mediasupply is good company, fast delivery on their mistui dvd-r media, which never fails on me, they are just a little expensive
bad media and store:
PCClub (sux, they are princo media)
Meritline DVD-R (false advertis send me wrong stuff, and basically told me they send me what i ordered and will charge me 15% FOR A PACK OF UNUSED MEDIA.)
CDDVDMedia (also own by meritline, sells exact same stuff, exact same crappy service)
accu (does not play in my DVD Player)
um... that's about it

ultima,if want to check out MERITLINE.COM for Maxell, you can use the coupon code MAX30PCT, and it will give you 30% off on Maxell. I have used it twice already... You can also find the info on meritline forum... 30% makes a big difference... Later

Regarding the Apple Disks, The older ones are OEM Pioneer disks. If you have Apple disks that are purple you have Pioneer disks and they are terrific. No idea who makes the newer ones, but they tend to not work very well.

Thanx man, but like my previous post, they jerk me around before, customer service is horrible, when you want to find out the customer service of a company, it's not when you have money for them, it's when you have a problem their willingness to solve it. everyone agrees?
I thought meritline is good cuz when I want to make a purchase they are always there, and when I have a problem they always dissappear or take the highground.

Well I own a DRU-500AX shipped with 2.0c firmware. I have the drive in a ADS Pyro firewire case. I got the drive about 2 weeks ago. I had some Princo 2x DVD-R's still left from the last batch I had before my poor old DVR-A03 bit the dust. So far I had nothing but great things happen with the new DRU-500AX I have now. The 2x DVD-R's from the last batch I have gotten from yesbuy.net for $1.05 each. Here's the link http://yesbuy.net/2xdv47gb10.html . Worked perfect every burn @2x. I just ordered the 4x DVD-R's from www.allmediaoutlet.com for $1.35 for a 100 pack here's the link http://allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVD-R-4XP100.html . So far every single disc I have burned so far burned @4x without no troubles. I have used the DRU-500AX on my Sony Vaio Laptop Pentium 3 1000mhz 512ram, My Desktop Pentium 4 2.53ghz, 1gig rdram on Windows XP with service pack 1 (with Intel Application Accelerator uninstalled), and also on my Mac OSX g4 350mhz 384ram with Toast Titanium. I suggest to everyone that they do not update their firmware what so ever. Take it from a person who has got nothing but 4x burns from the 4x dvd-r Princos I have burned. It is not needed, believe me. So if you need the 4x dvd-r's I am usng, once again, here is the link http://allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVD-R-4XP100.html .They work like magic and without no troubles at all. Just do yourself one favor and turn DMA on in both your Primary and Secondary IDE controllers and uninstall Intel Application Accelerator and you will be flying @4x everytime. $1.35 a disc for 4x is pretty damn cheap condering I have yet not one problem with them at all and all the other places are robbing people blind with the rediculously high prices at other sites. Also a little reminder to everyone that wants to know why their firewire DRU-500AX is not showing up in DVDXCOPY, just uninstall Intel Applciation Accelerator and walla!!!! It will pop right up. Took me about a 1/2 hour to figure this out, but I got it working. Good Luck to everyone and I hope my info and links help you out greatly. Any questions, feel free to email me at REMOVED! . Peace and Good Luck!!!!!

Don't miss this chance to get the best price on 4x Princo DVD-R media. You will be gratefull. Once again i am using the DRU-500AX in a ADS Pyro Firewire case with firmware 2.0c . Not one problem!!!

This message is for CrazyDJ, Wow, glad you are successful, but one question, how many stand alone DVD players do the copies you make play in?
Also, to add, I have Compaq with AMD athelon 1.47 ghz with 512 SDRam and a Sony 500DRU burner, I have had total success with it and my Maxell +R's that I get at Sam's Club. But to add, I tried to copy Beauty and the Beast special edition, and the second disc fails everytime, but it not the media causing it, it is protected somehow I guess, I am using DVDXCopy 1.3, 1.4.1, and 1.5, none can copy the second disc. If you have any answers, please let me know, thanks, Benjimen.

Well I promised to let you know what happened with these new Lead Data disks. I am sad to say that these new ones are not as good as the previous ones that I bought. They have all burned and as long as you don't use the whole disk they work great. BUT as I feared the melt marks on the outside rim have allowed small air bubbles into the media. The result being some pixelization and stuttering at the end of full disks. I don't understand why they would take a quality product like they had and mess it up like this, but they have.

Well the thing is, you don't turn off Intel Application Accelerator, you uninstall it. My computer seems to be running the same without it really. I really don't see any change, and if there is, it's not noticable at all. Good luck with the princo's. Make sure you have DMA turned on in your IDE primary and secondary controllers also. MAN DO I LOVE 4X BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well regarding those 4x Princo disks. I just ordered a 25 pack and will try them on my Pioneer A05. I also ordered a 25 pack of Ritek, I hope the princo work, because they are only slightly more expensive than the Ritek, but will burn at 4x.
