Love the discussions. I've tried several of the commercial programs but have found the simple way is working great for me. Hit them with DVDFAB Decryptor 3.0.4.0, then DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15, then remove the foreign languages, output to Nero 6.6.0.18 to a 4.7 gig disk. If DVDFAB Decryptor doesn't handle a new release, per example the DA VINCI CODE, I wait until DVDFAB Descyptor is updated. Nero came with the external burner, the other two are "freebees", more in the "Free Spirit" aspect of things. I have a SONY 42" HD TV with an HDMI connected player and there's no notable difference between the original and the copy. Multiple DVD software programs can create conflicts an operating system so I un-installed the ones I don't use and keep only the 3 named programs on the system. I'm running a 2.40g Intel P4 with 1024mg RAM to a Lite-On DVDRW SHOW-1633S external burner. I stay away from Memorex or more apt Memowreck and things go rather well. Regarding speed,8x is the speed limit, otherwise I get some nasty fragmentation. Cheers.

Ok, so I get passionate about AnyDVD sometimes. It's the best software to come out, in many years. It works.
But this isn't about AnyDVD. This is about DVD Shrink being faster on my computer, than Recode2. I make a simple statement, telling folks how it is on MY computer, and suddenly he jumps in saying Recode2 is almost twice as fast as Shrink, end of story! It's not end of story, and that's not a true statement. For it to be a true statement, it has to be that way for everybody, and it's not! It's misleading to newbies, and it's walking on thin ice (basically calling someone a liar, but between the lines, instead of straight to their face). And he keeps doing it, even after I've explained that I was talking about my computer, and not a blanket statement, meaning it(Shrink) would be faster for everyone, unlike his statement. In his last post, he did it again:
Quote: The TRUTH is Nero Recode is nearly 2 times faster than DVD Shrink, end of story.
Does everyone not see it? It is not the TRUTH........for everyone!
As I said before.......this is really stupid, school kid sounding stuff. I hate it has come to this. But again, I just don't like being called a liar to my face, or between the lines! When it's done, I have to say something. It's just that simple.
After I've said Recode2 is slower on MY computer, you can say it's faster for you, and a lot of others. Don't say it's faster, end of story! Because after I've just said that it's slower for me, and you make a statement like that, it's calling me a liar (between the lines), and I don't like it! It brings out the pissed off school kid in me!
I don't make blanket statements about AnyDVD. I say it works for me, and a lot of other folks, without problems. Then I say try it, because it may work for them too.
I think we need to move on. We have made our points, whether everyone sees them or not. If you don't see them by now, you're not going to. After I've said how something works for ME, don't jump in and say it works the opposite way, end of story! End of story means it works that way for everyone, and that's just not so!
End of story............

True, I said; "Nero Recode is nearly 2 times faster than DVD Shrink," but did I ever said or quoted you saying; "dude your computer sucks"? This is a public forum and everyone has "the right" to reply or post in here on behalf of his/her free will for "newbies" or those wants to the know how's DVD Shrink compare to Nero Recode.
Again, I "never" quoted you -- my post/reply was pretty straight forward (it's universal) for everyone, not you. You stated what works for you. I stated what works for me, what's fast for me, "it was there" for everybody to see. I never mocked or attacked you, yet you're the first one to jump in and attacked/quoted me. Don't try to reverse what's irreversible. Everything I said is still there, no edited.
Obviously, you didn't get my point (and or my post), instead you had mistaken and took it as something personal. Like I said; if you had something to "disagree" with me, then spit it out and we'll see what's up, or else I rest my case in this foolishness matter.
I'm here to help out newbies or those that are willing to listen. If it (my post) was meant for you, then of course I would have quoted you already. As much as I love AD and love helping others (newbies) that needed helps, I strongly deemed I'm not the type who loves to go around and attack or mock other members for useless reason. Being an ADDICT and Senior Member, shouldn't you already know by now who's quoting you, asking you, talking to you and or the reply was there openly for everyone?

Apparently, you "can't" handle the TRUTH. LOL!! Dude, I hate to repeat myself, but you're the one who called yourself a liar. Did I ever said; "JVC is a liar"? Hmmm... let see, I once thought you may be one of the few knowledgeable members here at AD, but that's undeniably wrong. In spite of you "disagreed" with my statement, why don't you go and ask all of the forums (i.e. Digital-digest, cd-freaks, Doom, etc.) to see who's statement is right in regards to DVD Shrink vs Nero Recode? Then comeback and we can discuss further. Other than that, I rest my case, end of story.
So to all the newbies out there, Recode is faster than DVD Shrink and this is the TRUTH. Don't hate now simply because I said that, I still got tons of love for DVD Shrink. Matter of fact, I still use DVD Shrink.

For my 2 cents...
I have been using Ripit4me anfter DeFab and Anywhere failed me on a job. It is shareware. You need to have FixVTS, the original DeFab Decrypter and Shrink. It calls these apps at the right time from within its shell. That produces the best copy out of all the senerios/ways to skin that cat. Most of the other packages fall short with some new release. I have all the software mentioned in this thread but only use this for new releases and scratched up originals. FixVTS removes or lessens the scratch effects.

Lately not much about Da Vinci Code, but interesting. Everyone does it their own way. When you first stop making coasters, you adopt that procedure as gospel, until something better, works. Hey but we all learn the different ways so they are there in case "our" way fails.

I haven't been here for as long as some of you all but for my two cents (its Canadian money so that means what in Amercian dollars?) I used DVD Decrypter then DVD RB (free version) and then ProCoder 2 on that movie.

What does ProCoder 2 do? Is it shareware? Even though I am not having any problems, it is best to keep current. I assume it compresses does it do anything else? I am quite impressed with Ripit4me because it logs what it and the other processes did to the disk. There is concererable clean up after the rip. That clean up effects the final product.
I rate DeFab Express higher (the shareware ripper by DeFab) than Anywhere. The get their releases out quicker back when I cared they were weeeks to a month ahead of Anywhere. I only had one problem with Express. If you go DeFab route I STRONGLY recomend using FixVTS. It gets rid of junk and insures the video sequences 'flow' one into the next.

there are easier ways, like dvdfab decrypter or anydvd/clonedvd2 that could save you some work and time... but if thats what works for you, who am I to question it?

What even works is always awsome!
Ripit4me takes longer as well. It rips at about the same speed but then there are 2 cleaning phases. Sometimes I slip the first step but never the second. The 2 cleaning steps take about 5 minutes. Some the process is about 5 minutes slower than DeFab+Shrink.

Get the newest version of DVDFab Decrypter - Copy the whole disk to your hard drive. Make sure to have all other programs closed, NOT running in the backgroudn, i.e. DVD43 and AnyDVD. After you've copied the movie to the harddrive, then run DVD Shrink 3.2. And BAM! you got your copy of the movie! It took about 30 min to copy the full disk using DVDFab, and another 7 to shrink it. Good luck.

OK, so I am a supernewbie trying to make a backup of the first disc of the two-disc WS special ed. I've tried DVDFab, DVD43, DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, AnyDVD, and all of these in combination (some while others in background).
With AnyDVD / DVDFab, I can't rip because I can't 'browse' to the DVD, which isn't recognized when I insert it in either of my drives. DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter yield errors about halfway through ripping. I can't even navigate to the VIDEO_TS directory (explorer, any of these programs).
Is this a problem with older drives (2 yrs old), or just being a noob? Any suggestions?

I hope you don't have DVD43, AnyDVD and DVDFAB all running together. Make sure the disc is CLEAN first and then make sure you've updated AnyDVD to present version.9.0.9.7. Close all the other programs that remove DRMs and don't do anything else. Defrag your hard drive and make sure you got 15GB of free space to work with. Restart you're pc and put your DVD in the drive. AnyDVD fox should pale out gray and then come back red. You should be able to rip the DVD with AnyDVD Then open the Video_TS file in shrink and proceed.

Has anyone had problems with the subtitles not showing up? I backed up by re-authoring the first time and no subtitles. Seeing as I am not multi languistic..LOL...this proves to be a bit of an issue.

"On Topic: As far as DaVinci Code goes, you will have to leave in the English subtitles on this one. I usually remove all subtitles, but on this one if you do that you remove the french translations to english as well. Other movies in the past that I have removed subtitles, they have still kept the parts of the main movie translations from a different language to english, but not this one."
Does that mean just leave the check marks in shrink on the "english" or on english, french and spanish?

Just leave the English subtitles checked permanently. You never know when you might need them. They take up very little space. Always keep you native language for subtitles! Sometimes actors mumble or speak quickly and/or quietly and you can't understand them.

Are there two choices for English subtitles?
One for the French dialouge in the movie and another for the Entire Movie? That's been the case for these type movies in the past.

I figured out how to get the subtitles to only display during the foreign language sections of the movie only. Uncheck Remove PUO in AnyDVD, and then select the english subtitles to be included in the rip. Worked like a champ using AnyDVD and DVD2One.
