Have a badly damaged DVD. Is there any "home" way to fix? Tried to back it up and get to 83% with shrinks and get error message.

Learning more but still leaning on a Newbie status! :)

Hi 247dad
Try buffing it out w/ something non abrasive. I usually try a bit toothpaste or car wax with a soft lens cleaning clothe. Sometimes works.
For those discs imho decrypter is the best. Try ripping w/ that.

If doing a full back up try movie only also.

edit to add: Is the error Cyclic redunancy error?

Binkie7 to my rescue again I see. LOL

Is the error Cyclic redunancy error? Yep thats the error I get. I get it at the 83% mark.

I will try the toothpaste thing. If it does'nt work will be a fun thing to try anyway.

Thanks for the help. (Again)

@ Binkie7

Well I now have the mintest smelling disk in town. The idea was great. It worked to a point that I now get to 85%. 2% increase. Thanks again for the advice. Good info to have for the future. But think this time the repair is beyond repair. Will just bite the bullett and buy the boys a new copy. They are worth it.

Thanks again for all the help and good luck with your repair.

Has anyone tried Dead Disk Doctor( http://www.deaddiskdoctor.com/?q=3&lang=0 )? Might be worth a try?

most of your movie rental stores will have a disk repair service and will cost as little as $1.50 to $3.00, also you can go to walmart and get one of the hand powerd crank models, they also have power models that work ok for what they are, one of the easyest ways to fix dammaged disks is to put some good quailty car wax on the disk and buff it out, also depending how bad the disk is, with the time and effort, you mighttry, and i have done this before is to put the disk on a dril like cordles and have the dril turned on and buff it out that way works faster thain just seting the disk on a table and doing it by rubing with a fine cotton rag hope this helps

It depends if you plan on keeping the bad disc. If not, run it under cold water and mild, non-moisturizing soap to try and get out any dirt in between the cracks. Never use a plain paper towel without any water. It'll just make more scratches. I also have thrown uncopyable discs in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. I don't know why, but it helped a few times.
