This deal is at Bestbuy. My question is this. Has anyone had any problems using TDK discs to backup dvd movies? I've done about a hundred backups using verbatim +Rs and I've had no problem but I've never used TDK. I'm using the NEC-1000A dvd burner drive.

That's just what we call pillow talk, baby... that's all.

I think the max burn speed for the NEC 1000A is 2.4x and the TDKs at Best Buy are 4x rated. Normally, you would think media is backwards-compatible, but you might have to upgrade the firmware just to be able to use the 4x-rated media, and you would still only be able to burn at 2.4x theoretically. If so, why pay extra for the 4x-rated media? However, I think the deal is incredible if you can get it. That's the cheapest I've seen for any brand media, slower 2.4x included. I've used the TDK 4x successfully, and it's stamped RICOHJPNR01. Ricoh-stamped media has always worked for my NEC 1100A.

The firmware upgrade on "2nd generation" dvd burners will allow you to burn 4x media safely, but does NOT give you 4x speed. It is worth trying 4x discs, they work well for many. The speed increase between 2.4x and 4x is not all that great, saving about 9 minutes per disc. It may work well for you. Remember, if you figure just the rate of data flow, 4x on DVD equals 36x on CD. If you can easily sustain a clean CD burn rate at 36x, you should be able to do 4x on DVD. The easiest way to tell your burn speed is to see how long it takes to burn the DVD. 1x=55min. 2x=28min. 2.4x=24min. 4x=15min. All times are approximate.

UPDATE
i updated my phillips . it is now compatible with 4x media . i burned the matrix in 24 mins on express thats still 2.4x
I backed up a concert movie on dvd x copy and it was ok too

Stick with what works Grayswan. Remember that old saying you get what you pay for. You could buy a couple test tdk and try them out. Let say they work fine for the stuff you burn on it. So now you decide to buy 100 of them. Then you start burning other stuff and majority of them fuk up so you just screwed yourself looking for a cheap alternative. Just remember you get what you pay for.

P.S. Your already saving alot of money by "backingup dvds" so what an extra 1 to 2 dollars more.
