xbox controller not working.

I am constantly having problems with my Xbox controller's, every time I insert the controllers in the Xbox port and start to play a game,
the message comes up "please reconnect the controller to controller port 1 and press START to continue" it is as if there was a bad connection between the Xbox and the controller, so I have to constantly unplug the controller and plug it back in an order for the Xbox
to recognize that the controller is connected. It does not matter which of the 4 ports I use, the same problem with all of them. Another problem I am having is after a few weeks the controllers quit working either partly or completely, I have went through 5 controllers in the past year, my initial thought is that the Xbox is somehow shorting out the controllers. Hopefully someone here can help me figure out what the problem is.
