running back up games with cheats on a back up ar max and swap magic discs

I'm in quite a predicament. I'm trying to use cheats on a back up game with a back up ar max and swap magic. This is what i've done so far.
I put in swap magic cd and run ar max.
I enter ar max codes and then run swap magic dvd(with codes).
I try to load a back up game but i just get a black screen.

Can anyone help me with this?

EDIT: I am using a slimline ps2 also.
