i could not begin to tell you the faults i've has this this format and program since i've known of its existance. lately, every other time i play a video from the hdd or from a stream, it plays well for a little bit and suddenly slows frame rate to around 1/4 normal rate, while keeping consistant audio. also, when i try to take a screenshot of any video at all no matter its format, where the video is is a black square, and if you play the video under the open picture, it will play throught the paint program but only if any video is lined with the black box. anyone have any tips for me or any clue as to why microsoft cant do anything right?

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

I wonder if something else is causing this. Have you looked at CPU, memory, and disk utilization during these slowdowns?

In the interim, try Media Player Classic or VLC. If the slowdowns keep happening it's something in your system.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I suspect it's a copy-protection mechanism, why you can't take screen shots.

is there any way to bypass? or does this occur with everyone?

I don't know, and it may be dependant on what WMP you have. This screen capture thing was discovered as a potential method to circumvent copy protection on hi-def discs a few months back on a particular piece of software - maybe windvd or powerdvd, I forget. I'm sure Microsoft either predicted that or learned from it. If you ARE using WMP 11, I'd uninstall it completely and go back to WMP 10, maybe WMP 9, though I can't guarantee screen caps will work then either. However, those older versions, esp. 9, do allow you more control over your system.
