I am wanting to buy some blank DVD's for backing-up some of my other DVD's. I want to buy a good brand that works on all DVD players, but I am a college student, therefor I am poor, and don't want to spend a ton of money on the discs, but I don't want to waste money buying discs that don't work or are poor quality. So if you could list a few and maybe some price ranges, that would be great. Thanks everyone!

Where to buy these discs so I don't get ripped off would be helpful.

just learning how to be a movie buff.....

if you're going to the store..... then buy Verbatim or any disk that says Made in Japan (MIJ). Verbatim is top notch quaility but made in Taiwan/Singapore. Sony, Maxell, Fuji... look for the ones MIJ on the lable!

if you're going to buy online then I would buy Taiyo Yuden disks! they are the best IMO! It's all I use, then Verbatim! you can get them at Supermediastore.com, Rima.com, Newegg.com, Merit.com, and other online stores.

here is a media guide for you so you can see what's good and what's crap: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

you can also learn how to booktype your media so it will play in MOST players: http://www.booktypefaq.com/

good luck. and welcome to afterdawn

As Ihoe indicated, I agree that those referenced are top notch.

If you are on a budget tho, Office Depot has their OD branded 100 ct spindles on sale this week for $19.95, regularly $59.95. These are very good media. Code out to Ritek P-16. I have burned several hundred of these with excellent results. Quality rating of 94 plus. Most in the 97 or 98 range. I actually got better quality ratings with these than I have with the Verbatim MCC-004's that I have been using for a while. My benq DW1650 like the P-16's better than the verbs.

Good luck and happy burning.

My Benq loves the Yudens as well. Absolutely the best that money can buy, IMHO. Cheers!

Here is my opinion, all these are what have worked very well for me:

Manufacturer: Brand:

Taiyo Yuden (Sony, Fuji made in Japan are TY as well)
Verbatim (Verbatim)
Ritek (includes Ridata brand)
Ricoh (Ritek +RW, Also Arita +R)

I have tried a lot of other brands, with some terrible results, mostly pixeling after time. Most of these can be bought on line for far less than B&M (brick and mortar=local stores) Of course sales do pop up from time to time in local stores. One of the better sites on line I use is Newegg.com. if you can catch their sales just right, they usually include free shipping. A lot of times this requires a mail-in rebate. I have never had a problem getting them.

The price for TY and Verbatim inkjet hub printable DVD-R 8x is about the same. I've been using TY for a long time but have been hearing great things about Verbatim. Should I switch or is TY still the best bar none.

Hi there,

I think Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are 2 great quality media.

Most TY you will probably need to purchase online.

Here in Canada, Verbatim are easy to find in most big stores.
