MS Replies to FW Hacks: Hitachi GDR-3120L v0078FK
>> There's a thread on our forums about a new version (0078FK) of the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L Xbox360 DVD drive found in newly manufactured (starting end august 06 anyway, maybe earlier too) consoles (mostly found in Australia and UK atm, but soon probably everywhere).
The drive has many changes to try to make FW hacking harder. Garyopa posted a great summary of all discoveries found so far about this new drive version:
[QUOTE]
There has been many changes done to the new Hitachi GDR-3120L - Version: 0078fk drive:
* 1: No "memdump" command works, totally new program needed
* 2: Chip type has been changed to a 39VF020, so new "flashsec" program needed
* 3: Black hard glue has been added covering all the chip pins and the controller pins.
* 4: External "debug" triggering into ModeB has been removed.
What does all mean:
* 1: The Team-X kit will no longer work on this drive.
* 2: Dumping the firmware by software is currently not possible
* 3: Wiring in a patching-on-the-fly "mod" would be very hard due to the "new black glue"
* 4: Removing the flash chip to externally be read will destory the drive due to the "new black glue"
What options are left to us:
* 1: Get more people working on this new drive, currently only in UK and Aussie.
* 2: Destory at one drive to be able to dump the firmware, using a external programmer.
* 3: Afterwards sitting down and re-writing all the programs: "memdump, firmcrypt, flashsec".
* 4: If you can't wait, buy an older produced x360 console (Before Late July/Early Aug. dates).

I might be buying my 360 this week - depends whether it comes in stock or not.
Its annoying cause really i really wanna play Pro Evo next month online, and to be honest I wouldn't mind paying for it. Same with Halo 1 & 2 etc.
The problem is that I would like to have my xbox modded so I can try out other games - I f i like them then i may go and buy them. £40 is a lot of money for a game. Evo has been my favourite game on the PS2 for ages so I know it will be good - especially on xbox live.
If i get it modded even if i play an original game i'm scared i'm gonna be booted of Live for good!!

However, what is good to see is that if this new firmware prevents a flash etc then why can't they adpat this online? Do you really think they will cut modded live users? It appears to me that they may have problems detecting people with modded firmware - I wouldn't have thought it would have been that hard tho?

I do believe that the minute they figured out how to detect current mods they'd start banning.
If you ever got banned from Live... it'd be your machine, not you. Worst case, you'd have to sell your 360 and get a new one.

Well ya... you'd lose your account, too. You'd have to replace your 360 and set up a new account.
What I was getting at is that you'd still be able to play on Live, you'd just have to start all over from scratch.

Hey Woz,
I dunno I thought Samsung was a problem drive as I had to really mess around to flash mine, but the hitchie seems to be a more problematic drive reading some posts accross the net.
And now MS are combating the FW hack or trying to, Im just glad I got my 360 now.

Why dont MS just make some sort of back up provision it would be a lot easier in the long run wouldnt it?
Lets face it we pay £50 per top title in the UK for our kids and I buy a few each year (did with the PS2) and im sick of them getting ruined and MS needs to address this..
Its all very well saving take care with discs etc to the kids, but the consoles themselves scratch the discs!!!

Yeah at the end of the day it would have its pros and cons. If Microsoft allowed people to play online with copies then everyone would do it.
Look at me, i'm in two minds whether to get the firmware done cause i dnt wanna get booted! Yet i would be prepared to buy the games i deffo deffo want.

That one looks like it'd be a real bitch to hack. I always thought MS would take the approach of making harder to hack drives rather than trying to detect hacked firmware on Live. It looks like I may have been right on that.

with regards to Tag's comment about a back up provision, best buy does have a policy for this. they offer a plan for like 5 bucks more that lasts either one yr or three years if it stops playing due to scratches or the disc gets shattered they will replace it free of charge. and how are you all having problems getting a 360? they are everywhere here. our wal-mart has a dozen at a time, and so does the wal-mart at my home, let alone the actual game stores.

Hey wabashman
We have a UK version of wallmart here I think and will look into that plan for as small a fee as you say it seems worth it, I didnt realise such a scheme existed..
Thanks

thats what mine has in it also. just waiting on all my parts to get here from newegg.com, decided to build a whole new PC to hack the FW and make back ups with, since all i have is a laptop, and it was cheaper to build a comp than upgrade the old desktop at home that we dont use. most of the stuff should be tomorrow, but the stupid case wont be here until thursday for some reason. and how many messages do you have to post to move from a jr member?

Black glue on it? Where?
EDIT> I saw the pics. So it is for the new drive because they wouldnt be able to put the drive on all the old ones. Lets hope mine doesn't have it on it.
You need to have 25 to become a junior member, I beleive.
Big Thanks To Jamaal10!
