I recently had my 39001 series PS2 start displaying really skewed images which almost looked like colored broken glass shards. The games seem to still work just like before but the display was just as I described. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like you're attempting to play a PAL game on an NTSC console, or vice versa.
Use forum search for more info.

actually it happens even with no disc in it during the startup procedure so it can't be just the game I'm playing.

Then its likely to be a problem with either the lead from your PS2 to TV, or the actual connector socket in either your PS2 or your TV.
So you're going to have to try & identify which it is.
Start by using another PS2 to TV lead that is known to work 100% (borrow a friends' if you dont have another).
If it still does it, then it's an A/V socket problem with the TV or PS2.
Hook up a DVD player to the TV, using the same socket as the PS2 does. If it displays no problem, then there's a problem with the PS2's A/V socket. If it doesn't, then your TV's A/V socket is at fault.
