I'm one of those people who always does a search on a movie so as to avoid any errors while creating back-ups.
This of course, (BTW I haven't got a problem) can create headaches because one person says I did it this way and someone else says they did it that way. This has happened to me when responding to threads, I think to myself that movie was easy, why are they having problems with it.
I have been having very good success using DVDFab VobBlanker and Shrink and of course Ty's or Verb's - This has been well and truly kicked into my psyche -
Recently had problems with "When a Stranger etc" and "White Noise" so I read all the threads and the conclusion seemed to be to use Fixvts, which worked a treat.
I wanted to write this to say a tremendous thankyou to all the people who not only write these great programs but also take the time to write guides. And then there's the rest of you, making suggestions here and there, tweak this, tweak that, do this, do that and so on and so forth.
I have to say that I am in awe of all of you. Afterdawn is my all time favourite.
Very recent success's, Munich DVDFab and VobBlanker
When a stranger, and white noise DVDfab and fixvts.
Many apologies for the length of my seemingly useless thread but I am truly amazed :-) May I and all of you have continuous success.

how do you know which movies you need to use fixvts on? ive always just rip with dvdfab, run through VobBlanker, shrink and burn. i can count the number of problems ive had on one hand. ( thats out of several hundred burns.)mostly just a menu that doesn't want to work correctly, never in the main movie. so is there some way to tell or....? im glad that you have also found an way to rip and burn that works for you.
on another note. the people here at afterdawn are some of the most intelligent and helpfull people i have ever had a chance to interact with. i am proud to say that i have learned alot, but also have alot left to learn.
tjedwards.
If your not a little scared.....youre not riding hard enough!!!

Glad you had good luck with FixVTS, it is one of my favorite programs and produces a very clean file. You may want to try out RipIt4Me which works with the old DVD Decrypter by creating/importing a PSL file to break the encryption. If used in 1 click mode it will rip your file, clean it with FixVTS and then open Shrink. I have been using this and have great success with all new encrypted movies. You can check out more here.

You have your choice of Full DVD, Menu + movie, movie only. Also can rip in file, IFO, or iso.

They're (FixVTS and VobBlanker) both extremely awesome tools. Regardless of which route I used/ripped, DVDFAB + VobBlanker or RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS), both methods are flawless to me.
To be honest, I've never experiences any dvds/movies that I can not rip and backup using either method. If you're an advanced users, then there's no such thing as "I can't backup this, I can't backup that, etc." In contrast, if you know what you're doing, then there isn't any dvds/movies that can not be ripped -- simple as that.
Like I've said many times before, it's not the programs, it's the users. If they (he/she) doesn't know what they're doing, then regardless of what tools they used, the issues will persist.
Just my 2 cents.

DVDFabDecrypter then VobBlanker (if needed) then DVDShrink. That's the process I use, haven't encountered anything that couldn't be backed up, yet.

I have only backed up a few movies, maybe 10. I have been using AnyDVD, shrink and Nero. No problems. Is there any reason I will need to use any of the programs mentioned previously......ie DVDfab, VobBlanker, fixvts, DVD decryter ?

Again, amazing responses. I am not very technical and it usually takes me some time to figure out a program. Only been using VobBlanker for a month or two.
Like I said, some people seem to have the worst luck in the world. A recent movie with many threads was "Inside Man" I think I just used Fab and Shrink, although recently I've been running V/B as a matter of course.
With regards to knowing which programs to use, you don't!
When I played "When a Stranger..." I noticed that it was a Fony, oops, sorry, Sony film and so did a search. Now, again some people breezed through this without any probs. But when I opened V/B I got the warning messages straight away as described in the excellent guide by alkohol and when it started processing I was getting the message on every file, No navs found, outputting a blank cell.
When the process finished and I opened Shrink, I got a further message, can't find file...whatever.
The original disc size was 7.95g, after Fab it dropped to 5.79g and when I located the VobBlanker file it was only 1.35g so I guessed there was something seriously wrong with this.
Went back to the forums and one suggestion was fixvts. Now I'm always wary and just a bit scared of trying out different software but this program and the guide was simplicity itself. I got rid of all the other files on my computer and started again from scratch, using Fab, fixvts and shrink and it sailed through. Magic!
I'm going to ramble on a bit again. HelpPleas says is there any reason that these programs need to be used. Yes, they are FREE. You paid bucks for AnyDVD and I am sure it's worth the money and I notice a lot of people advocate this program, but If you've got the time, as I have, it's worth investigating these excellent programs.
I think as alkohol says it's not the programs, it's the users. Just take your time, investigate, read and read again. When I find a guide I usually paste it into a document and have a good read of it before I start using it. With regards to your guide arniebear, I've bookmarked that for now and will read at a later date.
Have to go soon, She 'who must be obeyed' is home today and has started huffing and puffing. My cue to sign off.

Yeah! mines got an OCD obsessive cleaning disorder. She say's things like, "you sit at that computer all day and never do any cleaning" I say "Whoa! I empty the ashtray and throw out the cans" just kidding, they've got there uses. I don't really mean to offend, might get a barrage of abuse otherwise.
OK one more! I tried using the 'Vanish' on her, but she's still here.
With regards to ripit4me, I'll maybe try it out when I get the Da Vinci Code. And dvddecrypter, I still have that program on my computer. It was and still is a fabulous program. A guide from Doom9 I think it was on the old decrypter forum introduced me to shrink and I have never looked back.
Just going back to that question about knowing which program to use. The problem will usually occur in the ripping or processing stage. And thats how I've progressed from DVDDecrypter to Fixvts.
If one program won't work, try another. That's why we have this great forum. Quoting alkohol - there's no such thing as "I can't backup this, I can't backup that, etc.
Edit:- The thing I have learned above all else is, READ the threads and read the guides.
