Get a 'fat' one (v1 - v7) they're far more reliable than the slim, and can boot far more apps etc..
Always 1st with 100% working PS2 Online Game DNA$ IDs!!

Just look at the back of it and it will explain alot ever wonderd why ps2's went from 750au to 350 in 2 years its because v1-v7 are made in japan v8-14 are made in china which means cheaper production costs and poorer quality i have a v3 ps2 from the end of 2001 and has been playing backups since 2002 and i have yet to change the laser while the v9 that i got in 2003 i modded it in 2005 at the start of 2006 the laser burnt out i got a replacement and then the moterboard burnt out so i just chucked it and bought a v14 late this year modded it too and its running fine but dont know how much longer it will keep up being good. listen to ace1uk advice, a v14 isnt too bad its been fixed since the v12 lasers problems have been around prety much every ps2 will read backups for a year perfectly but v1-7 will last longer after that but v8-14 will start getting disc read errors after a year of backups
Also you figure if you are bying a v7 or so it will be 2nd hand

I really doubt it, if they dont go for the V14 its the best slim out and its very easy to find as its the latest out

IMO, the v14 is the best buy with the following reasons:
1. It is the latest version
2. It has in-built lens fix since v12 versions.
3. lens are newer than v1-v11 meaning better compatiblity.
4. v12-v14 lens are much cheaper and easier to replace(if need be)
5. no more brand new v1-v11 in retail stores.
6. slim ;)

Magic Keys/Slide Cards aren't extremely risky for your PS2. You will however need to purchase SwapMagic v3.6 or SwapMagic Coder v3.8 to play your PS2 backups. Once you've got that, you can install the Magic Keys into your slimline and be playing in less than half an hour. For a Fat PS2, get a Slidecard if you're going with SwapMagic.
On the other hand, I had a recent experience with a friend who has a v14 and bought SwapMagic and asked me to install it for him. It took about an hour to install the Magic Keys, and v13-v14 requires a much harder C/D part install compared to v12, as those versions fixed an exploit by adding more metal >_>. v13-v14 PS2s also do not support the Flip-Top Lid that was made for v12 due to the exploit fix.
SwapMagic is great, though, if you don't want to void your warranty. So either you get SwapMagic (it'll come with the Magic Tools...normally-check to see they're bundled before buying) or you get a modchip. For the Fat PS2s, I believe there is a memory card exploit, but the MC exploit takes a lot of time to complete.

i have a v14 it was a total pain to install the "slim kit" for Swap disc so it plays with top open.. it has a small metal tab in the way of installing tool c which makes for a very risky operation.. just fair warning oh and it doesnt read -r backups just +r and you need to do minor laser adjustments to get it to read correctly.. just fyi for you out there

No that is not true it will read -R better then +R, Do not listen to the V14 dont read -R, Its like saying a DVD player doesent read Dvd's.
A v14 ps2 has the best compatibility out of any other Versions of the playstation 2.
Thanks for that aaur4 i never knew that the V14 had a laser fix!

i burned one entire packge of DVD-R and my friend gave me one +r disc, same brand and it worked. first try! the game was metal slug 5 one i previously tried to burn on a -r and it didnt work.. this theory is not based off of any proven statistical evidence. try it your selp, pm me if it works cause im tired of wasting discs. but the other thing i was saying about the small metal tab which is vital if your going to be using swapdisc. use a knife to get under it and bend it up. so instead of saying -r doesnt work i will just say it has some issues

Tool C isn't extremely hard to install in v13 and v14 models. The newer, metal one requires you to install Tools A and B first. With the lid open, turn on the power, and put a disc in. Then insert the C tool into the metal slot until the disc spins. Once this happens, get some tape and tape Tool C there. The disc should continue to spin. It might also be a good idea to tape Tool A-that one goes missing a lot. I have never heard of anyone using a knife to bend the metal under the lid so they can install the original Tool C, which would be pointless since you might screw up the lid, and then you would have to open it up yourself.
As for disc compatibility, people tend to prefer DVD+R over DVD-R as +R can be booktyped into a DVD-ROM, which means the disc is almost like an original copy. Its people's choice though to use whatever they want. SwapMagic should read both types.

@dazila
them princo are not good for ps2, your lucky it still works.
DVD-R work on ALL PS2's, DVD+R are better (when booktyped) but only work on V4+ consoles.
