problem when installing windows xp pro HELP

hi guys,
im reinstalling windows xp pro on my pc, the cd was a copy.
anyway i started installing it, it restarted the pc and carried on, when it gets to bout 36% it freezes so i reset the comp and it just restarts the installation even though i dont tell it to and again it freezes at 36%.
So now what i do is try to repair the installation by pressing any button when it first says 'press any key to boot from cd'
it takes me onto the screen wher it repairs the installation. it finishes the repair, 100 % and then the next screen just tells me that i cant repair it cos there is an internal error WTF!!
so i now try to install a 'fresh' copy of xp pro by booting from the cd again , it takes me onto a screen where it says that there is already an xp OS on the partition and that if i install 2 OS's then i could have problems, so now i dont know what to do, the options that i have is to delete the partition (which i dont know what will happen, will it sort of format my HD) or i can continue with the installation anyway.
So now im stuck please can someone tell me what to do to either repair the installation or how to install a fresh copy. please help soon you dont know how it feels not to have a computer

PS i used two xp pro cds to try and repair the installation both are copies but i know one of em should work

When you boot from the xp disc, choose to install.When you get to the partion screen, assuming you have one partition on the disk choose to delete that partition. When that is done you need to then create a new partition and then continue with the installation on that new partition.

is there a way of doin it without deleting evryting on the drive

There are ways to do a repair install and repair xp instalation, but it depends what is going wrong. If you can back up your hard drive it would be better to do a clean install. If not have a read here

those sites dont help me, thanx for tryin anyway if youve got no other methods then ill have to do a clean install and delete the partition (i hope at least that this works)iv also tried to do the last best known setting and im getting no luck with that either anymore solutions guys??? or even if theres a way to cancel the setup alltogether and to continue using windows like i was doing this time last week, i would very much appreciate it if you could help

PS when i try to do an upgrade when booting the disc, it tells me that there is already a setup running on the system(which i obviously know is not workin), when i try to press r to repair the upgrade it takes me to a screen that says
'setup has already attempted to upgrade the following windows installation.
C:WINDOWS "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
Setup will try to complete the upgrade again'
now it gives me 3 options 1) to retry upgradin to windows press enter, i do this it copies some files onto the harddrive, the copying is done 100%, now it says it will reboot in 15 secs, it does reboot and then it takes me back to the original faulty setup wher it freezes when it says that there is 34 mins to go when it is bout 2 thirds the way thru. the 2nd option is to install a fresh copy(am willing to do this as a last resort) and the 3rd is to quit
PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY

ye it went well, here i am using my desktop pc again, it wasnt too bad, iv spent the best part of 2 day reinstalling all my applications and im back to normal iv not lost anything really; all my downloads and stuff was on a separate partiton so its all ok now

I know that feeling. It's amazing just how many little pograms and tweaks need to be applied to just get the system back up to the functionality of the old system. May be worth investing on a ghosting program when you are done. That way you can image the whole instalation and if you need to re-install you can bring it right back to its present, newly installed state. Good luck .

In case some one else needs the answer.
I think the "setup has already attempted to upgrade" problem is caused by using an origional SP1 CD to repair an SP2 installation. If you see the message, try and get an uptodate CD and try again - Worked for me
