1. So if you have backed up an old movie (without compression) onto a 4.7 G DVD disc and it fit. Then, the same movie comes out on Blu-ray is one better quality than the other?

2. Do you think that eventually you will be able to transfer this old movie on DVD to the new Blu-ray format?

1. BluRay will have better picture quality. Here are the specs for each format:

DVD
Single Layer Disc capacity - 4.7 Gigabytes
Maximum resolution - 720 x 480 (NTSC)
Bit Rate - Up to 9.8 Mbits/s MPEG2

BluRay
Single Layer Disc capacity - 25 Gigabytes
Resolution - 1920 x 1080
Bit Rate - Up to 40 Mbits/s of Video data

2. A dual layer BluRay disc can hold about 23 hours of SD video so theoretically yes.

Why would they be out dated? They will probably be playable long after the Blu-ray format goes away. The discs will cost so much no one will go for it. How many DL DVDs you buying at present? Anyway it looks like the other format may win out. Sony may be backing the next incarnation of Betamax! LMAO It'll be hell to copy HD movies in the new Vista OS too boot.

NO. Read the specs above. They don't convert DVD's into BluRay movies.

Regular DVD's are standard definition.
BluRay and HD-DVD = High Definition

If hardware/software comes out to up-convert a standard DVD to an HD-DVD or BluRay the result won't be anywhere near the quality of an original HD-DVD/BluRay disc. It's like the A/V Receivers and DVD Players available now that up-convert to "High Definition". I can't explain it in technical terms but they're really just guessing what pixels to add to increase the resolution. The result may (or may not) be better than the original video, but definitely won't be true High Definition.
