Forgive a complete newbie for a question possibly previously asked, however I did search to no avail.

I am new at this backup scene (I did follow the backup guide posted by a member here using dfab, VOB, shrink and Nero) and am frustrated to find my backups don't work in my car DVD system...argh...this of course frustrated my kiddies even more :)

Any insight would be helpful..thanks in advance!

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

Do they work on other stand alone players and on your pc? Test them out on as many drives as possible.

Make sure your pc,using the same DVD-RW drive that burned those backups, can play them to near perfection. After that comes the stand alone player factor.

What's the brand name/model #/and firmware version of your burner? Use Nero infotool to get that info.

What's the Brand name/format/and rated speed of your blank media?

Sounds like a compatability issue, if your car player is the only drive that won't play them. Usually switching to the opposite format helps. Depending on the model# of your burner, booktyping would definitely fix that issue. Not all drives have booktying capability.Booktyping can only be performed using the plus format media and booktyping capable drives like: Lite-on/Plextor/Benq/LG/and a few others.

Booktyping: Also known as bitsetting. This alters the plus format and sets it to dvd-rom. This is the format of original dvds, which the stand alone players were meant to play. Now on dvd+r/-r/+rw/-rw/and dl backups, those stand alone players are more prone to have issues recognizing them. Booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom actually fools those picky players into thinking they are actually playing the original dvd-rom disc. A little trickeration, and solves the no disc/dirty disc/wrong region/wrong format errors most of the time.

Thanks for the help. I did find out that my audiovox vod916 WONT play dvd-rom type discs, so says the owner's manual.

I am trying the suggestions made by IHOE tonight.

Thanks again for the great information...now more reading for me :)

Original movies are dvd-rom,but different than a dvd-rom disc for the pc.

Here's an original dvd,and you'll see dvd-rom as the format:

Media Information
Disc Regions are 1
Media code/Manufacturer ID N/A Pressed DVD
Format Type UDF 1.02
Volume Name DEUCE_BIGALOW
Application id
Implementation id Daikin U.S. Comtec Lab
Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 4/ 5/2000 16:04:01
Format Capacity 4.47GB(4.80GB)
Book Type DVD-ROM
Media Type DVD-ROM
Data area starting sector 30000h
Data area end sector 23CC83h
Layer 0 end sector 21FD4Fh
Linear Density 0.293um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 2
Layer Track Path direction (OTP) Opposite track path

You can't go by the specs. I've encountered a slew of people who's drives stated on their specs that they wouldn't play a certain format, but did.The opposite can also occur.
Players react differently with plus and dash backups. They can even have trouble with backups from certain burners. Even trouble with certain MID coded media.Burn engines can even be a culprit. I've seen them all.You may have to fish around to find the right format and media for that player.

If you can booktype, you'll have the greatest chance for the car player to recognize your backups. If not,try the opposite format-but make sure it's quality media like taiyo yuden or verbatim. Quality media will prevent a slew of issues, especially for stand alone players.

What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?
