Why would you get external for a fat PS2? external means USB 1.0, USB 1.0 means the slowest possible speeds. Games wont run properly if at all using USB and movies of higher bitrate will stutter and skip.

Get an internal IDE HDD basically all are compatible as long as its not a western digital (dont physically fit) and everything will run faster than from DVD.

Yes it would be quicker and easier to transfer files but the compatibility issues dont really make i worth while. You could get a USB enclosure which would save you having to open your PC everytime you want to transfer stuff. All really good PS2 HDD apps support USB HDDs.
