Hi all,

I hope this is the right forum. I have a DVD a friend sent me, but the original won't play in my DVD player. It starts and then just freezes 1-2 seconds after it plays. (The original is a Sony DVD+R, region-free DVD according to DVD Decrypter). The DVD will play perfectly on my computer.

My setup:
Software: Nero Vision 4, Nero Burning Rom 7
Media: Verbatim DVD+R
DVD Player: Cyberhome CH-300

Using the exact same setup, I've successfully created at least 5 movies. So, I first ripped the DVD using DVDDecrypter and tried to re-burn it onto my Verbatim disc. Same problem. I then ripped it in IFO mode and used Nero Vision to re-author the VOB files. Still won't work. Tried TMPEnc DVD Author, same problem. Converted using VOB2MPG and then burning the MPG file (using both Nero Vision 4 and TMPEnc DVD Author), and it still simply stops after playing for 1-2 seconds. Both the VOB files and the MPG files work on my computer without problems.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Okay, an update on this problem. Some more googling reveals that this could be an RCE protection problem. The symptoms are exactly the same. I have a region-free player. I can see the menu perfectly, but it forces my DVD player to stop after only 1-2 seconds of my DVD is played.

HOWEVER, there's a big problem: DVDDecrypter does not detect any RCE protection at all. Neither does IFOEdit. So I have no idea how to decrypt this.

I've tried ripping the VOB to mpgs and re-authoring, but the same problem pops up inexplicably. Ditto when I converted the mpg to AVI and re-authored that. Could it be some sort of protection in the mpg/vob themselves? I'm really confused. Any help would be appreciated!

Did the burn play correctly in the friend's player?

I haven't been able to test my re-authored disks on this one because my friend actually lives in another state, so this was a mailed DVD. But here's what I have been able to test:

My player: Has the stopping problem on both the original and the burned versions. This only seems to be the problem with a few select disks. It can play most of the other region-coded dvds.

My friend's higher-quality region-free DVD player: Will play the original & direct rips of it without problem.

My friend's non-region-free DVD player: Will show error message about region-coded DVD, even though DVDDecrypter claims that the disk is all regions with no RCE protection.

I'm wondering if there are any guides for more advanced decrypting available? At the very least, the disk sent to me should have some indication of region coding on it.

Try running it through DVDShrink and see if it's accepted. Shrink is pretty particular about structure. If it takes it set it to 'no compression', hit backup and go to the Region tab, untick Region Free and set the region to '1' and let it create new files.

In case Shrink errors out get this:

You might to try it by itself on your ripped VOB's.

You might also try VobBlanker on the original burn and look for any anomalies.
