Trouble when enabling DMA

I have an hp 300i dvd+rw burner. It is supposed to be DMA compatible. However, whenever I click to enable it, and my comp restarts, my two dvd drives disappear in thin air. Its really pissing me off because I hear enabling DMA can really improve performance. Also, after this happens, my secondary IDE controller has a question mark beside it in the control panel. Id appreciate all the help I could get.

Disable DMA, it wont really work with it enabled, sorry.
