I am trying to rip a blockbuster TV dvd (the dvds you see playing advertisements inside the blockbuster stores) and having severe problems. I can rip the files using dvd decrypter, but when I put them into virtualdub and attempt to frameserve to TMPEG the video is completely scrambled.

The DVD itself is very interesting. When you put it into the player you are greeted with a menu with a bunch of numbers. You must key in the correct code (from a seperate case) to access the next menu. The next menu is a series of days for the month and the dvd plays day specific content based on which day of the month you select. Anyone ideas on how to copy this?

What you are doing is illegal and, if I might say so, a little odd.

Your a Junior member and should know better than to advertise illegal actions by yourself or others :-(

This isn't illegal at all. I didn't steal the blockbuster DVD. It was given to me by the General Manager at my local blockbuster location with their approval to copy. The copy, if I'm able to make it, and the original will both be returned to the store. They have two copies of this dvd and destroyed one. I told them I could copy it so they'd have a second to play in store. I was very clear about it and he was very clear that Blockbuster had no qualms about me doing so.

I suppose trying to get past the copy protection is technically illegal, but I was trying to help out. I can close the thread if need be, I was just wondering more for a curiosity sake as well about this new encryption. It seems to be quite effective. I'd like to know about using it on dvds that i've produced. I just really want a lot of info is all.

As long as you dont hold on to the DVD for more than 24 hours, then i dont believe there is a problem. I liked your reply ;-)

I hate titles

I would say that your best bet is to get it copied 1:1 if you're lucky enough and the disc is DVD-5 to a DVD-R disc by using DVD Decrypter's ISO read/write (check our guides for info how to do this).

I wouldn't even bother trying DivX, VCD or SVCD.

If it's bigger than DVD-9, rip all the files and run DVD2One or DVD Shrink for it (Full Disk) to preserve the menus and stuff.

dirtynbl,

I'd also suggest going for DVD2One, DVD X Copy or DVD Shrink. There's no point in trying to fiddle with VirtualDub etc.

If you rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter, can you play the DVD from harddisk using, for example, PowerDVD?

And if it's loads of advertisments as you state you might want to do a FULL-DISK back up using DVD2One or DVD Shrink as there will be a few title sets no doubt !:-)

Yeah. I gave it back to blockbuster and told them I couldn't help them out. I had first ripped it with decrypter, then I tried DVD2One and dvdshrink to reprocess it. nada. the picture was screwed up on playback. framserving from vdub was my last attempt. neways, thanks for all the help, sorry my question ran the gambit between legal/illegal.

Don't really want to start the whole legal/illegal issue but isn't it a little ironic that people who frequent a DVD ripping forum and seem to spend all their time trying to circumnavigate copy protection systems on commercial films, should have a go at someone for copying a DVD full of adverts.

there's nothing special with the previously viewed discs you purchased...they are the same ones you would buy in a store. most likely nero's freaking out with your disc. try burning with a different program. i personally hate Nero so...

we were talking about a disc taht blockbuster puts out for company use only of all the instore advertisements. you can't purchase those.

No-one cares about how they treat a rental DVD , so therefore I would expect a lot of them to have read errors & much more...

P.S. Nero does everything I ask of it. (All down to system spec & of course preference)

true, but if DVD Shrink is able to rip the DVD successfully Nero should theoretically burn the image...right?

I would use DVD2One after DVD Decrypter & then I know it would burn in Nero...
100% of the time , well to date anyway.!

As to your DVD Shrink question , possibly is my reply as I dont use it so I cannot give a catigorical affirmative (but in theory yes)
What options are selected in DVD Shrink tho... (?)
For example:

[guide(s) kindly put out there by Oriphus whom I happen to know prefers to use RecordNow w/ DVD Shrink]

and therin lies my reasons for disliking Nero. I forgot about that option in DVDShrink. Good call.

So you really prefer DVD2One to DVD Shrink?

I don't mind you disliking Nero mate (aslong as it is based in a constructive critical way).

That's not so constructive ;-)
I'd listen if you elaborated on certain situations where Nero gives errors etc...

As to DVD2One Vs. DVD Shrink , I was using DVD2One long before DVD Shrink came out & have no problems so it might seem that 'if aint tbroke , then why fix it' ...BUT I did try out DVD Shrink in initial stages just to see if the video quality was better after compression.
Must admit I have found all versions (have tried a few anyway) of DVD Shrink to be about the same , and to be honest I do mainly Movie-Only back ups so as to save full 4472mb for video quality. Hence DVD2One does do me fine , when 'join' mode & 'variable/constant' compession was added then a lot more was do-able.

peace

my reasons for disliking Nero are just based on years of experience with it and distast for some key things. I do use it for a few things, but I especially never liked it for DVDs.

I too started on DVD2One and DVD95Copy, but I really enjoy the ability with DVDShrink to get ultraspecific with what I shrink (I like to keep the menus and such) in addition to being able to reprocess without have to rip it to the hard drive first. It's a big help for saving disk space.

Sorry I was sort of abrupt with my distaste for Nero.

Nero has a nightmare sometimes , so just try uninstall & reinstall as this usually works for everyone (that hasn't changed anything, for instance hardware or firmware).
